My favorite two BG hooks for bait is a Gamakatsu C12 in size 10, and the Eagle Claw Circle Hook # L702 in sizes 10 and 12.  BGs hardly ever swallow these 2 hooks, especially the circle hook.

Im not hook proud, and dont normally search out particular models.

I go for

1. Size: between 8 and 16 usually. I often give the hooks a twist to offset the point.

2. Composition: light wire almost always

The only other thing I insist upon is sharpness. I take my hooks out of their package, hone them so they'll stick in my fingernail and then store them in small styrofoam blocks or a hook wallet.

I usually have 6-10 of any of several sizes in my 'possibles bag' when I leave the house.

I thought I wasn't either until I used these two kinds of hooks!  It's all I use now for fishing crickets, waxworms, mealwroms or earthworms.  Probably work good for minnows too.

My biggest issue with circle hooks, at least with larger fish is not setting the hook  I guess as a kid I learned to use the ole Texas whip  for everything  LOL

Maybe I should look them up. I wonder if I can get them at WalMart?...

I prefer to use a 8 or 10 since I like threading it through a cricket body, seems to keep it looking  natural.

Tru turn 10 red for live bait.

I like size 6 and Its reduce for bluegill  to swallow a bait! Sometime size 8 for right size of bait like giant redworms!

#10  long shank light wire

Walmart brand #8 and #10 octopus circle hooks, Gamakatsu #10, #12, and #14, various brands of circle hooks #8 and #10, and #10 bait hooks when I'm out. Other than that, jigs. They don't swallow jigs.

Primarily a Tungsten ice jig with plastics user year around. #10 during open water, #14 is the basic in winter but a #20 on 8 - 12oz leader is not out of the question if they get really finicky and they're just kissing it. When it's cold and they're hitting like that it's lip hookups, very, very rarely a swallow. Catch plenty of 8"+ on the #20, if swallowed it's back to the #14

Great mention of the ice jig!

What do you use to detect those light, kissing bites?
