Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Well I finally had some luck with beetlespins. caught about 10 crappie on spins today. They weren't that big, but fun to catch.

Also caught 54 gills on hot dogs, only 6" to 7" but had a great time

Way to go Dwayne! Beetlespins have to be one of the all time favorite fishing lures. What color and size did you use?
Thanks Steve..........I was using 1/32 with black and yellow bodies. I have a lot of the blk/yel bodies, I have been going to make gill bugs out of them.
I really liked the colors on this one

Pretty bluegill Dwayne, aren't they all! Good choice for colors on the beetlespin. Along with orange/black, the yellow/black are real fish getters.

I think one of the main tricks to Beetlespins is to use them a lot. They are highly variable, in my experience. I fished with them throughout the spring, and never did catch a fish on one.

Based on the way people talk about them, one could easily be led to believe they are the fish gettenist lure ever conceived. "There is no wrong way to fish a Beetle spin..." is what you often hear.

I'm not convinced this is entirely correct, though; I'm pretty sure I have hit upon the one unproductive method for them!

David, I was feeling the same way. I have fished them a bunch of times, with no luck. The crappie in the pic, is the first fish I ever caught on one. I caught 10 crappie in 30 min today, using a beetlespin. I now have faith in the bait.

All the bluegill today, were caught on hotdogs.

Well Dwayne, Im not gonna give up on em. I have about 3 or 4 dozen of them and a mess of them without heads, so I can make my own.

Ive got different blade styles, too, Colorados and willow leafs in different small sizes.

Sooooo I can get em in the water!

David, here is a pic of what gill bugs look like, they use them alot on ky lake and at reelfoot lake. Beetlespin bodies are used alot, legs are skirt material.

Oh those are nice - beetly bodies with rubber legs.

Maybe my problem is the big fish are scared! The little ones nip away at my lure, and seem to like it enough. But I always have a big twisty tail grub on the lure, the tail of which the nippers go straight for. Perhaps something a bit more petite, without the long dragon tail, would be better. I need to get me some of those rubber legged bugs, or make em.

Pretty cool. Thanks for the idea.

David, I tried a tail grub on the spinner and the bite, went away. I switched back to the bodys, like a maggot and the bite came back.
See, there might be something to all this body stuff!
Those are big hot dogs!!!!!!!!!!!! How big a hook do you use to thread on a 6 or 7 inch hotdog?????
