Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Cardell Barbarin asked if anyone skinned bluegill and I got to wondering - is that the same idea as skinning catfish?

I fillet and skin all the bluegills I catch. I use an electric fillet knife and it takes less than a minute per fish.
I fillet and skin all the bluegills I catch. I use an electric knife  and it takes less than a minute per fish, but when I cook them whole  fried skin is the best part.

I picture cutting fillets free from the skin as different from actual "skinning."

When I imagine "skinning" a fish, I think of how we do catfish. I've never 'skinned' a scaled fish, like a bluegill, that way.

I have knocked the scales off with a high pressure washer before , works real well, just dont do it at the car wash.
Pretty good idea!
I,too, take the skin off with an electric knife while filleting-just flip the fillet over and continue in one smooth motion!!  HOWEVER, in my youth we used a method called "flash in the pan" where we notched with knife behind the head, pulled some skin flaps slightly lose on the back, then grasped head in one hand & exposed meat in the other, and pulled - presto, a skinned, gutted panfish in one second!! Somewhere, last year, I saw a pictorial of this efficient old method online.

Seen this for Yellow Perch .John,  it works for Gills and other fish?

Yeah, John, that's the video ! Learned this as a kid from Field& Stream about50 years ago! My mom, sister, and I used to clean over 100 white bass in about half an hour using this technique! Also used it for bluegills & other panfish.
How about THAT! I am for sure going to try that one!

And still another video for speed cleaning a bluegill. Isn't the internet great?!...

I've watched that video about 6 times, still haven't figured out exactly what they did Can someone who knows how to do this describe exactly what is going on? I got the removing the dorsal fin part, but what does he do in the next step, about where the camera man says "No way!"

Go look a the video I posted, where they do this to a bluegill - it might help you.
