Frank I think with some time you will master the technique and on the same page is there a sufficient # of fish in the area's your fishing. I'm assuming your using  light  spinning gear but you are at a disadvantage fishing from shore and I know sometimes that can be hard but many years I fished from shore and till I got my boat I just didn't catch the fish in numbers unless you have access to a peace of property you can walk on during spawning. Maybe just starting with a float tube. There are fish in many places on any body of water and you have to be able to reach and evaluate these areas throughout the lake your on. I know your from Mich and Mich is blessed with some graet fishing. I fish the lower part of Mich mostly in Hillsdale County. I know the lakes I fish have productive water and the spots do change so for me a boat is a +. But as far as jig fishing there is nothing like it that is 90% of my fishing. The main thing is have a good rod with good line so you can feel then light bites even then you won't feel every bite. I'l give you an example last week on vacation we went to Farwell Lake in Jackson County Mi. The water was crystal clear. I've been fishing forever but the way I caught the fish was I'd throw the jig out and let it settle on the outside weed edge probably 14 or 15 feet deep. You know I couldn't feel every bite but I could see them so when my jig disappeared I set the hook and caught many fish like that. Frank all I can say is practice, practice and more practice and always remember that outside weed edge. Hope this may of helped you somewhat.

I AM A SHORE FISHERMAN TOO. I RECENTLY TRIED CREME MINI TAILS WITH AN ARTIE 1/16 OZ TUBE INSERT TUBES. I TRIED SILVER HEAD/WHITE TAIL AND SILVER HEAD/YELLOW TAIL. I HAVE ALSO USED A 1/64 JIG WITH A YELLOW BEETLE.  I HAD SOME LUCK WITH IT CASTING INTO THE SHALLOWS AND BRINGING IT OVER THE DROPOFF LETTING IT FALL & SIT ON THE BOTTOM & THEN RETRIEVING IT SLOWLY. IT IS ALSO FUN TO FISH WITH POPPERS(HAD MORE LUCK WHEN THE WATER WAS DISCOLORED). HAD A LOT OF LUCK ALONG AN OUTSIDE CORNER OF A STREAM FOR GILLS.

THE MAIN REASON I USE JIGS IS TO STOP FROM CATCHING THE SMALLER GILLS.

HERE IS A FUN NEW LIVE BAIT TECHNIQUE I HAVE STARTED USING. CHECK YOUR LOCAL FISHING REGULATIONS.  IN MICHIGAN YOU CAN USE 3 POLES WITH A COMBINATION OF 6 HOOKS. A SINKER ON BOTTOM WITH 3 PRERIGGED GOLD ABERDEEN HOOKS BAITED WITH NIGHTCRAWLER. JUST, STARTED THIS WEEK. HAVEN'T CAUGHT A TRIPLE YET. BUT I CAUGHT A LOT OF DOUBLES. I USE THIS ON ONE POLE & CAST A JIG OR A CRANKBAIT ON A SECOND POLE.

Hey BW...try just about any small 1/32 or 1/64th oz jighead tipped with a piece of nightcrawler or a cricket. You can fish them below a bobber or let them slow fall and watch your line for a slight 'twitch' or 'jump', thus indicating a strike, or as soon as the bobber dips under. . Set the hook quickly.

If you are fishing dark, tannin-stained waters then you might want to try the color pink in jig selection. Several of our BBG members have been having great success this year with that color and it has worked well for me in darker waters.

hey tony i dont own a boat so i rarly fish from one.So whats a good lure or jig for bank fishing?

Are you fishing from shore, or from a boat? With the coming of hot weather the big gills may head out to deeper water, and casting from shore usually means your lure starts going shallow as soon as you start your retrieve. This translates to less time in the strike zone for your bait. It is my opinion that an artificial lure requiring a cast and retrieve approach is best utilized from a boat, or other offshore means, at least when the fish are in deeper water.

Also, many artificials are fished parallel to the weedline, which again requires the angler to be away from the bank. You can fish a simple jig, or wet fly, beneath a small float and remain on shore if you choose to. I'm using a small tube jig right now, either red or pink work well for me.

So, do you have a boat, or some means to get away from shore?

Try a spoon......it just might change the way you fish for gills. Since discovering the triggering capabilities of the spoon....the amount of worm poop this technique has prevented from getting under my finger nails could be measured in linear yards.

A float small split shot flies used for fly fishing i like nymphs they seem to catch more fish

take small cigar float put a small spilt shot on each side leave about 12" or so it depins on how long your rod is, the small crawdad crank bait works good, drop shot rigs with a #4 or #6 hook with small jig body and panfish sticky glue i got mine at bass pro shop for about $7.00 the drop shot rig is what the bass guys use you can find out how to tie it on line,it has really work great with 4lb, 6lb line i have  been useing it for a year works best when its hot and winter fishing, i use big split shot or 1/4oz bell sinkers its a killer rig for crikets i bet it would work with worms to, small brown jigs with a peace of red yarn or just the red curly tail added to a brown jig works real good, longer rods are good choice they make good long ultral lite spining rods today its easer to cast lite offerings to the fish,

shhhh!  don't let this secret out! also you should hide it behind your hand while you put the cricket on or fish might jump in the boat lol. seriously I've caught tons of bluegill this way. another secret you will catch alot more fish if you check your hook frequently and make sure the very point of the hook stays buried in the bait
