Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Here are some lures I've had luck with: black and yellow cricket (Warmouth), watermelon dragonfly (Bluegill and RB Sunfish), yellow split-tail setup (Warmouth, Spotted Sunfish), inverted moxie minnow spoon (Bowfin, LM Bass, RB Sunfish), and black/red speck cricket (small Bowfin, Bluegill)

Ken - for the moxie minnow, I very slowly retrieved it and twitched it around, sometimes stopping the retrieve and jigging it a little. It's basically a spoon-type lure with a slight curve to it. Quite honestly, I reluctantly bought the moxie thinking "this silly inverted minnow ain't gonna catch a thing", and boy was I wrong!  The size is 2 1/2 inch, but I believe there are a few different sizes you can get (Northland Fishing Tackle). The above model, which is the glow redtail, doesn't even have a reflective side - the side opposite the minnow side is just solid color paint. Some of the other moxies have a reflective side opposite the minnow side.

The beetle spin surprised me too - I had never used that type of angle-rigged lure. The black cricket didn't surprise me at all. Very first fish of the trip, first day - a furious Bowfin decided he wanted to keep my cricket in his mouth, so he chomped down, slicing the mono line like a razor blade and then he fell back into the river...LOL. I guess the Bowfin was thinking "finders keepers, losers weepers".

McScruff - that's a nice little go-to setup you have.

Capturing the baits that work is something I do, too. Heres one look from a day I spent with Big Don Schmotzer:

The Workhorse Lures

They are shown with a cell phone clip to which Ive added a piece of EPV foam. I attach this to my fishing vest, and stick the "killing" lures of the day in the foam when I change up. When I'm home, whatever caught fish is right there on the clip for me to review.

Nice variety of baits......I have tipped beetle spins for years on the fast running rivers of the Carolinas for some great Redbreast......good looking baits Ben!
