This was neat…..we were catching fish on both sides of this piling and he refused to move…..

Yes…..this is a “brown water snake” Bruce…….non-venomous snakes but large females can still deliver a nasty bite …..if startled, this snake will drop in and go under immediately……..this is a female that is approaching six feet long, she will mate with a male about half her size…..it’s impossible to give population data but I’ve read estimates of greater than 10,000 in Albemarle estuary with many small snakes being eaten before maturity…..we have six poisonous species in North Carolina including three rattlesnake species, along with coral, copperhead and cottonmouths…..

Whoa, that does look big. You say it's a brown snake? Poisonous? Around my part of PA we watch out for timber rattlers and copperheads.
