Wow ,wish I was there Jim! Never saw Carp through the ice ,never caught a Carp ,just ripped their scales off fishing for Trout .

A lot of the "stuff" associated with ice fishing today is meant to reinforce one of the sport's most fundamental and successful strategies:  "If it's easy to move, you will move"

And moving, in order to locate active fish, is key to success IF, IF your goal for being on the ice is to catch fish. If you're there to spend the day with friends playing cards in a cozy icehouse, or hanging out in a shantytown drinking beer with buddies and watching the crazies on snowmobiles, then that's okay too. 

But if your goal is to catch bluegills, you first need to find bluegills, then you need to stay on bluegills. Or perch. Or crappie. And being equipped light enough to pack up and move, and being able to drill holes with a minimum expenditure of sweat, will translate into a greater willingness to move. And that will greatly improve your odds of success. That's where a lot of the $$ comes into play....lightweight augers will punch holes effortlessly, while sonar will tell you if that hole is worth dropping into. High tech clothing will keep your hands, feet, and body warm, which means you're more likely to spend more time out there....more time to find, and catch fish.

There's nothing wrong with punching a hole and camping over it all day, if that's what you're there to do. But greater success will usually come with mobility. And ease of mobility, does come at a price. It's the same with open water. Successful anglers move to find fish. You'll catch some off the dock or the ramp, but if you can get to where the fish are, you'll probably do better.

David, Winn? ,I'd never have guessed ! Leo, hope to hear you weigh in on the pronunciation of your name,pal. Jim C, a $300  Hummingbird  ICE35 flasher unit is a nice thing to have on the ice .I don't consider it a Trapping ,saves time finding fish .

i rarely keep fish either john,makes me happy to see them swim away even.except for perch.those suckers are like lobster to me.if i'm going for lake perch i make sure the fryer is clean and full of oil before i leave the house.crappies from freezing cold water are a close second.the last time i ice fished 10 years ago we got into giant carp on clear ice at night.it was surreal as you were standing over them trying to get them to the hole.many could not fit thru the hole and broke off.

thanks guys,i will be hitting the ice this year ,first time in yearsi quit fishing when lake michigan froze last winter and my son fished thru the long winter and caught a lot of fish.i always looked at ice fishing as the simplest of fishing as you dont have a lot of options as once you poke some holes your kinda committed to that spot for a while..i was just reflecting and studying up on what is new and was amazed at the gear.not so much the actual fishing gear but the tents and power augers and electronics.artificial weed beds to drop down the hole.some of my favorite open water spots dont allow boats or wading so i can actually fish places i could never get to before
