Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

All tied in Bullys Bluegill Spider fashion.
They sink, butt first and backwards. Bluegill follow, as a rule, and when the fly falls back towards them... BAM!

Ive been moving some pics around my albums and when I do, they reappear here in the forum.

Thank you, Keith and Lee. I fully confess that I am a total nimrod at the fly tying bench. It isnt difficult - Im still learning how things work, that's all. My dad used to do it when I was just a lad, but that wasn't anything he let me in on. Probably best, too. Energetic little hands and fiddly tools don't go together too well. By yhe time I was maybe old enough to start, he had passed away. So, it is only now after decades that I am trying it for myself.

Lee I appreciate your help. What I cant get are the legs to stand perpendicular to the hook shank. My first thought is that they SHOULDN'T, because the thread wraps opposite from the direction needed to make that happen. I'll check on YouTube and see what Im doing wrong.

I'm waiting for the live rubber legs to arrive. Meanwhile I have some silicone skirting to use.

Keith, these are just random ties, with stuff I had handy. I didnt use the right hook or the right lead wire... I just grabbed what I had (baitholder hooks and solder!). After watching them work, I think I could get by with half as much solder as the recipe calls for. My solder is larger than the .020 lead wire called for.

But thanks on the colors - I tend to go with traditional colors. Black, White, Red, Yellow, Brown, Green... you get the idea. Chartreuse is probably as far as I deviate from that.

I really like the color combination of the one on top (black and tan with black and white leg) great job tying

Looks great David, for the rubber legs it's helpful to position them then do 2-3 loose wraps just tight enough to hold them in place, adjust them and then do a few tight wraps. That and I think the silicone legs are easier to work with then the rubber legs. I just buy packs of colored spinner bait skirts and use them.

I know the fly was developed by Terry and Roxanne Willson. I have their book,
"Bluegill...Fly Fishing and Flies." In it, they describe how it came about and the idea
behind it. Just as you say, they learned how it behaved in the water by taking turns in the pool to watch it sink.
I'm gonna say that I struggle a bit with the rubber hackle legs.... getting them to
cooperate is a challenge. The rest of it is no trouble, but the legs always want to go everywhere but where I want!
I didn't know they were members at BBG, though. That's pretty cool.

David, I Like tying this fly, but have not had much luck with it!!!!1 Did YOU know the DESIGNER of the FLY was a MEMBER on the SITE!!!!! He designed the fly to match a cricket falling thru the water!!! Would TIE it and DROP it in the POOL!!!!!! He hasn't been on in a long time, But HIM and HIS WIFE are GREAT FOLKS and TEACHERS!!!!
