Thanks all! I'm glad evryone has enjoyed this fish since its a relative unknown fish out of the 18 species of sunfish. The 1 pound 4 ounce world record is shared in North Carolina's Little River in Spring Lake and Lowndes County, Georgia. The genus name is Centrachus and the species name is macropterus. It gets its name from the sharp spines on the anal fin. My personal best is 1 pound 1 ounce so I became interested being close to a world record!

WOW! So, that's where Jeff got his photo from for the FishingNetwork forum. Beautiful! I thought he caught out of Lake Perris. Looks like these guys are crossing their genetics over to make beautiful hybrids.

Wow this is something I've never seen before. At first I thought it was a crappie. Now it looks like a bluegill with crappie fins. What a strange looking fish it looks like a bluegill that crossed with a crappie if that's possible. At any rate thanks for the picture it is a very unique fish.

I snapped this shot right out of the water. You give taxidermist Tim a picture like this and I'm sure the fish would look alive!  I plan on getting a big Flier mounted for sure!

Its a gamefish that counts toward your total sunfish creel in North Carolina. They are easily mistaken for Crappie when they get a little bit bigger like this one. They become dominant in locations that have low oxygen and high PH factors like swamps/marshes . The only places I have caught Fliers is Coastal Virginia and North Carolina. The bigger ones are pretty thick like a Crappie so the filets are nice!

There's some nice Fliers in coastal North Carolina and Virginia. I catch quite a few in the flooded cypress swamps that I fish. These two fish today are citations in North Carolina. A Flier of 6 ounces and/or 8 inches long is cosidered a sunfish trophy. I'm barely hanging on with water temperatures today of 58 degrees!
