Man Jeffrey what a beautiful Seed

That's about the size difference that we have here. Males seem to be bigger among most lepomids with the exception of longears I believe. It could be a coincidence but the biggest longear I've caught was an 8 inch female.

Some fish are just a work of art and I give them a free pass like this one...not a big fish by any stretch but one of the prettiest sunfish in our waters.....One day I'll catch one of these guys 10 or 11 inches and it'll be on the wall....

No worries, I can answer that with an emphatic yes, it has been my experience that the females are smaller here as well.....most of them are five to six inches...

That's interesting I really love redears and that's interesting that the biggest ones live in ponds. I always thought that they grew bigger in large lakes. I must admit, I had a junior moment just then, I meant big female pumpkinseeds always seem to be smaller.

Thanks Jacob....these are traditionally the earliest sunfish to bed on our local rivers and this year is no exception....Yes, I have caught big female shellcrackers but the brackish rivers in my region don't hold great numbers....The best Shellcracker fishing near me is in a chain of lakes known as the "Suffolk" lakes just across the border in Southeastern Virginia......I'm going to try to take a Redear trip next month to hunt a few nice ones.....Most of the biggest Shellcrackers caught in N.C. have come from ponds including the state record a few years back.......

Out of curiosity, have you ever caught a big female shellcracker? The big ones in my boat are always males.

You're really catching some nice seeds this year Jeffrey!
