I expected that, Jim. Most really large cats are caught on live or fresh cut native bait fish. This is especially so for blues and flat heads. At least that's what I've understood, since I cannot claim wide experience at cat fishing.

But, I've burned it into my brain that if you want a trophy catfish, use live or fresh cut NATIVE fish as bait.

Stinky, contrived baits work, of course. This we know. Yet, it seems there is a dividing line at around ten pounds.

All the fish we got at the James were 99% on cut gizzard shad. My son's personal best, a 53 lber, came on a live bluegill when we were hoping for a flathead.

Nice fish! Caught on live bait, or cut?

February is a great month for the bigger, 50 pound plus, blue cats on Virginia's James River.

pity i live 30 minutes away from the james and i have only fished for the big boys once but have caught a bunch of smaller ones with dad when i was younger when he had his boat at home instead of the eastern shore chasing cobia and drum
