Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Had to work split shift today, so no angling. But, I got some hackle in the mail so I tried a 'Bugger.
I just threw some chenille and marabou on a hook, then "palmered" hackle over that. My first try, The hackle really does the trick.... I see now why there is no substitute for feathers.
Screwed up trimming the marabou; 'looks too rectangular.
But I still like it.

Tanks for looking!...

Leo, I just stopped looking in mirrors long ago.
Every time I do, there's some wrinkled, greying codger staring back.

Trust me friend, you deserve the credit.

You give me too much credit. Smarter? Hardly. Better loking? I woke up and my mugshot crack the mirror little by little each day.

Yeah, Dick... I remind myself of Leo!
Although, he is smarter and better looking.... Other than that, we're two peas in a pod.

Thanks Leo and Dick.

This was a size 8, 2X Mustad streamer hook. I decided to actually follow the pattern recipe for once on this one, and so I got the specific hook called for. You know the deal, picked up on ebay as a bulk lot of 100. $2.00 + $1.50 for shipping and I'm in business.

Depending on what you read, Boogers are most often considered a streamer pattern. Thus, this particular hook. Sometimes, though, I see them classed as attractors, since they don't really look like anything in particular. But they are in the Wilson's book, "Bluegill... Flys and Fly Fishing," so I had to tie them if I am to follow their example. However, no matter what they are called, streamer OR attractor, they need to be relatively small for bluegill.

That brings me to my next, or follow on effort - take that "bluegill size" thinking a step further and go to an even smaller hook. I'm pondering a 10 or 12 size, again on a moderate length. A regular fly hook will probably do just fine. These streamer hooks are maybe a little too stout for this scaling down effort. For comparison I took out the calipers and got these numbers:

Standard #8 dry fly hook - .0251 wire diameter

Mustad #8 streamer hook - .0335 wire diameter

Should a bass take an interest in one of these Mustad-tied 'Buggers, the hook will NOT be the weak link, I can tell you! But they strike me as a bit too heavy for even the largest bluegill.

Also, I will probably have to trim the hackle length for my "Mini Boogers," since even these are a bit too "woolly" in my esteem. I can just see me with my magnifiers and my tiny little scissors, trimming back the feathers.

I know you can hear Dick saying, "Yeah, you got it bad buddy!"

Nice first try. Better looking than my mamoth buggers. It will surely get struck.
