This is the North Carolina Record bowfin caught on the Black River in 1997....17 pounds 15 ounces...My personal best was 11 pounds 2 ounces in 2005 on the Pasquotank River in N.C..... I believe I once had one bigger but my light tackle became expendable as my rod broke at the handle leaving my small zebco dangling...I had seen the bowfin pass the bow of the boat on the way to deeper water.....We don't have a group for the one that got away plus there wouldn't be any pictures and we got to have pictures......

call me crazy but I would desperately love a big bowfin or much less a fin of any size seen one bedded while fishing for gar it was a mule

Dont fish for gar on purpose, but have caught a few in my day. I have a nice scar on my foot from one. got it when I was a kid. Spent lots of time on big muddy river, as a kid. A bowfin will flat tear a crankbait up. Lost some good wood plugs to them over years
