Looking for info.

Would like some info on kayaks. I told myself never happen because your setting so low. Now I see they have done wonders with the seats so my interest is back somewhat. I would love to check into them as far as comfort which ones I should be looking at and maybe a propulsion system foot or small electric. Again Just looking for now with a couple back surgeries I want to look long and hard. Strictly for fishing.

Try calling a kayak shop or check online, Dwayne. After doing a lot of research I spent $1800 on a Hobie Oasis that I immediately hated because of the weight. Luckily I got out of it without loosing much. It would probably be worth a 2 or 3 hour drive to find the boat that will suit you.

Thanks Rick. I have been looking and asking around, about a demo day, around here.I cannot find nothing. I guess maybe in st louis I can find something. Only place around here is Dicks sporting goods, they have nothing going on.

There are a few reviews on paddling.net, Dwayne. It looks like a cool boat at a good price. The advise about trying before you buy is solid. Look for a "Kayak Demo Days" in your area and you'll get to paddle lots of boats. Choosing has everything to do with how and where you plan to use it and any specific needs you might have on top of that. I really like my Old Town Discovery 119 because of the weight (39# with the seat taken out)  and the price ($399 at Dicks). If I had lots more money to spend I might own a Native Watercraft Ultimate 12 in Tegris...bulletproof and only 30#.

New to "Bigbluegill". I fish out of an Old Town 119. I like the 37lb  weight (after I took out the horrid plastic seat that came with it) and the roominess it has for gear. There are boats out there that I like (or think I'd like) better, but they're too heavy or to expensive or both. Anyway I'm glad that I discovered this site and look forward to learning. Until recently I've been more of a salt water guy.

Dave, I have been using a NuCanoe for over 2 years now and it has been a real dream of a boat to fly fish from. It is stable and provides plenty of room to fly fish from. As far as getting wet, I get just as wet from a SINK boat as I do from a SOT boat. Also with a sit inside boat there is always the worry of swamping. Not so with a sit on top. When the water turns cold, I dress up just as if I was going to wade a river to fish. Waders, boot and etc. will keep you dry. But the best advise is to ALWAYS try the boat before you buy. Good luck,

For hardcore fishing, a lot of anglers prefer sit on models although they are more expensive and have their drawbacks.

You sit higher and tend to get wetter on a sit on kayak.

For calm water, a sit in kayak overs a lower center of gravity and slightly more protection from getting wet.

Sit in kayaks start at about $300 new and go up from there. Used models can sometimes be snagged at reasonable prices.
