Do you love big bluegill?
The recipe is also still work in progress, any pointers on how to make it a powerbait texture would be great. The recipe starts out with a glass jar, then a few packs of kraft chedder powder from boxs of mac n cheese, then a bottle of orville redenbackers butter flavored popping and topping popcorn oil, and mix together in a jar with chopsticks with a sqeeze of orange. Like I said it needs some work, i would like some help on how to get it more sticky without using sugar. Thx for any advice! p.s dont use the whole bottle of oil, i forgot to mention that. lol!

Cheese dip for worms might be alright what ever your taste buds prefer!!!! I like my worms marinated in butter and garlic overnight then fried in olive oil!!!!!! Fry them just shy of being crispy!!!!
Im a little confused - is this for cat fish bait or for tailgaiting parties?
by the way - good to see a post from you Jason... where you been??
This is mostly a catfish dip/powerbait for trout if you can tell leo about this post, he might know how to perfect it, and greg sounds good. :)
I'd substitute sardine oil for the Orville product- and probably liquify the sardines, too, in a blender and add the whole can to the mix.
I'd grate up Velveeta and get rid of the powdered stuff altogether. Garlic, too, seems to have a universal appeal to fish. A clove or two might not hurt. For a binder, all purpose, unbleached wheat flour is good. Oat flour is also very "sticky", if you can find it. Add just enough water to work this together into a packable blend, with the consistency of soft putty. If you want to make dough balls out of it, for jug and trot lining, add a little more flour and then quickly blanch 1" balls of it in boiling water.
Okay, so I've pretty much overhauled your mix, but, well - sorry. Catfish sense protein based amino acids as they disperse in the water, much as a shark does. This is why they are attracted to cheese and blood baits. It has very little to do with the bait being rotten stinky, or assembled from a kitchen-sink list of ingredients. There is more science to it than cookery!
Think of it like this. In Spring, many creatures that succumbed to the winter end up in the water. This can be fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals - you name it. As the temperatures rise, these poor creatures begin to rot and their decomposition sends out a trail of the critical protein compounds into the surrounding waters. The catfish, which are really like swimming taste buds, pick this up and home in on it. This is why the traditional stink- and punch baits works at all.
Keep this in your mind as you prepare your baits and be very deliberate about what goes in. In so doing, you will be taking advantage of the fishes own natural senses and instincts.
LOL! Can't believe I actually missed this post. david got it nailed with the protein and blood. Velveeta cheese i the ticket. Just becareful of a few things though:
If you're making bait for cat, you're smacked dead on the recipes. If you're trying to mix it for other species, unfortunately, the worms + cheese combo will scare the crap out of them. Mixed amino acids and putrefied proteins will make the trout and panfish run for cover. It's a gastonomic reaction, like you're hurling after a good take of spoiled meat.
Suggestion based on ratio for a 1/2 cup based. Break it down even more for smaller sample creation:
1 part corn meal (may add more to make it sticky instead of runny)
1 part Velveeta
1/2 part olive oil
1/2 part sardine oil. Better yet, 1/2 part sardine oil mixed with 1/2 part solid sardine chunk.
1 part ground earthworm. Best to use African nightcrawlers.
1/4 molasses
1 tbspn of garlic powder
1 tbspn of seasalt
If you're making it for trouts and panfish, minus the earthworms, minus the sardine oil and sardine chunk, and toss the corn meal. Use the dried shrimp or dried anchovy as dried based ingredient instead.
Oh , This is for Bait????? Now I am confused I thouth it was for a snack after fishing!!!!!
Jason these guys are so funny. I would add garlic of coarse and David did hit it on the protein. I'll be experimenting with a whole made BG chum myself this year it's in process. It will be something you can hang over the side of the boat and hopefully if it does it's thing it will draw the fish to the boat so you can fish around the boat. Like I said it's work in progress.
THX FOR THE INFO GUYS, ILL TRY THAT OUT, AND DICK I HOPE YOUR CHUM COMES OUT WELL. :)
I can't believe David didn't suggest this but if you are headed south add GRITS!!!!!!!
Be sure to take an IRON SKILLET with you, if'n the fish won't take it it sounds good fried, bound to better than the CATFISH!!!!!!!
I believe I saw these recipes on PAULA DEANS Show!!!!!
OK Greg there is that word again, It called chum.
So Dick, how about that Super Chum of yours - how is that coming?
