Well, good points. Storage is always important. I expect to have mine cut down in the coming months, so Im listening to you buddy. LOL

Interestingly, it isn't reels that I find to be so much improved as the rods. The reels basic function is pretty cut and dried, really. But, even in-expensive rods today are shoulders above the older ones.

LOL I know what you mean. Nothing has improve much, but the materials have increased the performance of the equipment. I love the newer ability to prevent the snagging during the high drag session. The older ones I had, during a massive drag event by the large boys on light line, the reel tend to snag and the lines snapped. I'm not pissed off at the reel, but the lost of the potential fun game in pulling it in. The newer ones, moderate in cost, have such wonderful non-snagging drag, but the maintenance can be of a headache if I want to keep the smooth drag and non-snag consistency.

It IS the materials that matter.

Many older reels had very effective drags too, but the angler had to take care of them. As long as you know this and mind the drag washers as you should, all is well. One of the reasons I'm not a keen fan of the Zebco 202/404/808, even today, is the metal-on-metal spool drag used.

But even with today's modern plastics, the drag mechanisms aren't very different. What has changed is that these materials help eliminate some of the fuss.

great collection david! i have a few myself. glad to see someone else enjoys the same hobby. i'll see if i can get a pic sometime.

That'll be great, Tomas. When I cant hold em, I like to look at em!
