Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Just joined today. Looks like a great place to get good information on Bluegill fishing. I live in Alaska and have for the last 40 years. I lived in southern Michigan until I was 14 years old. I fished for and caught a lot of gills when I was a kid but haven't caught a Bluegill in quite a while. I would like to do some ice fishing for some Bluegills next winter and am asking for suggestions. I am enjoying the site and look forward to any help I might get.

WELL MAURIE WELCOME TO THE SITE AND THERE ARE LOTS OF HARD WATER FISHERMAN ON HERE SO YOU'LL BE RIGHT AT HOME .......

Thanks David, I appreciate the welcome. I am having a good time checking out the photos and information. Sure makes me want to go fishing

You may well be the northernmost member of BBG, Maurie :-)

I know AK has arctic grayling, various trout and salmon, and (I would guess), maybe northern pike and possibly muskie(?), but do any of the bass or panfish species survive that far north? Perhaps the water never gets warm enough for them to spawn?

Welcome to BBG!

Jonathan

Jonathan,

No we don't have any panfish or bass or walleye up here. You are right we do have Northern pike. No muskie. The trout,  salmon and grayling fishing is great but I miss Bluegills.

Interesting, I didn't know that walleye and muskie didn't range that far north. I wish walleye ranged this far south and west (San Diego), or at least yellow perch. I think there are one or two lakes in northern California that may have Walleye, but not near the bay area, where I lived for a while. There are a few places that have illegally introduced northern pike, and the California DFW not only has a kill-on-sight order out on them, but a regulation that if you catch one, they want the entire fish.

Welcome to BBG. Can't wait to see you pull gills through the waters that far up north. My wife's side of the family pulled plenty of gills in the northern part of New York, which have always been a treat to see.
