Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

so any one got what they call a lucky rod or reel? maybe one that has a funny story to it or been passed down the family etc? i like the stories folks have for gear the memories make fishing more fun.

i have a lucky rod, funny story with it. its an ultra cheapo zebo made in china bright pink from wal mart came with the worst reel ive ever felt the all plastic 202. I bought it about two years ago for my girl friend she wanted to "find out about this fishing" i was doing. so at first i was excited to intro her to fishing went out and got her all the girly pink stuff for a saturday. pink rod reel floats bobbers even a pink folding chair. she loved all the stuff they were "cute" we get to a fishing hole and not five minutes in the complaints start. its hot this is boring its too silent out here - was silent. im not touching the bait. flash forward half an hour and about seven trips of me to trees and reeds to free her line she gets mad gives up and takes half the bait to feed the ducks.now she touches it for ducks but not to fish. she refused any pointers or instruction. so there i was with this pink zebco with hearts on it. now dont get me wrong i will wear a pink shirt now and then but i didnt care for the pink fishing rig. so an hour or so goes by no ones looking and shes busy with ducks and face book on her phone so i decide i payed good money for that stupid thing im going to give it a try..... first cast out bam. small mouth bass. reel felt like it had sand inside it. but it caught a bass cant be all bad. second cast out, again reeled in another nice fish. i pulled in over 20 fish within in the next 2 hours. all on the pink zebco. girl friend comes back mad, why are you getting my pole dirty use yours... so i give it back she tries it again, first cast out three feet from the shore i should add and she pulls in a real fighter of a blue gill. of course it was slippery and not fuzzy so i ended up with the pink zebco again to get the fish off the hook. since that day its been in my pickup and is my go to rig. ive never once used it and not caught something. even on the worst day i pulled in a turtle. landed a six pound channel cat with it and that was the end of the 202 reel. got another reel for it and the streak just kept on going. one time i went to the creek near my house and caught so many fish back to back the folks across from me on the other side got a little mad and demanded i show them the bait i was working with. i just explained that those were my trained fish and they just come back to my line. they didnt see the humor.  used it so much i burned up another cheapo reel. so i got a little better reel for it and its still catching like crazy. its starting to crack where the reel snugs down and foam on the handle is getting pretty rough but it reeled in good gsf tonight in the rain. the fancy rig i had next to it got nothing. when other manly men see my pink zebco they make fun of it and me.  its still a bit awkward when another fisherman or park ranger comes up and i have a girls pink fishing rod with hearts on it. a guy asked me why i was fishing with a chicks pole a couple weeks ago when i had better ones in the truck, i told him dont judge lucy . so thats my lucky rod, lucy. if you see a big guy in boots with a sissy fishing pole its me.  so im sure some of you have funny lucky gear stories lets hear them.

I sure do! Got my first garage sale spinning rod-reel combo, not knowing the first thing about how to use the darn thing. Went to the nearby lake, and attempted to use it on my own, after investing $5 on the combo, and $5 on lines, hooks, sinkers, and baits. Within 5 minutes, that combo went into the lake without catching any fish because I didn't know how to properly use the gear, and casting the line. The combo went launching into the lake's depth and I wasn't able to recover it.

Looked around, found a broken broom combo, took of the broken broom head, used  twist tie and a paper clip at the top of broom head, used my tin can I had containing my pineapple which I ate for lunch, spooled up 100ft worth of line, loaded up with a bobber, added live bait, and caught fishes to bring home for dinner. My lucky rod-reel combo story. Lost it when I moved. I believe my mom threw it out thinking it was an odd thing to have.

that was a good story! to bad mom tossed it out.
