Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

How big do these guys need to be to fillet them?

Personally, I wouldn't fillet anything under 8 inches. A while back someone said they had a slick way of filleting pan fish. He was supposed to post a tutorial, but never did, at least not as far as I know.

I think it depends on how comfortable you are with a knife,  as well as how bad you want fresh BG for dinner! I don't usually fillet any BG under 7", but I have gone down to 5" when I was desperate, such as those times when I needed enough fish to feed a group on a camping trip.

I prefer to fillet gills in the 8 inch category, but I have kept numbers of abundant, 6 inch class fish thru the ice to fortify a fish fry.
