Do you love big bluegill?

Just got back into fishing for Bluegill, had an Ultralight spinning rod made and have been having lots of fun fishing my local lakes for Bluegill and Bass.

Tiny crankbaits have really been the ticket, they seem to thin out the smaller fish and rarely do I catch little gills on them.

Caught about 30 BG today, most were in the 7 - 8 inch range but a few nicer ones also showed themselves, including this 10" Specimen.

All were released to fight another day.

Yes...I have been using the Snap Bean for about the past 4 trips to the local bluegill factory.  The first evening I got 52 gills on it from dinks up to 9.5 inches, with many 8's. As colder weather has set in here in the Mid Atlantic, the crank bait bite has died off a bit... I got maybe 10 on Friday evening , mostly small. Great little bait, though!

Thanks all, didn't know there were different species of Bluegill.
I'm going to put some serious time in on this water as I am certain there are some real trophies in there. I saw one today that was much bigger than any I caught today.
Here's one from two weeks ago. Caught on a Pop-R chugger.

Nice 'gill John, have you tried the black rebel crickhopper? Thats one of my go to lures in the warmer months. Crank it down and pause and let it slowly rise usually they slam it on the rise! Fish it shallow around structure

Thanks Jordan, no I haven't tried the crickhopper, I will check it out.

I'm pretty much a beginner at freshwater fishing in Florida, I mainly fish the saltwater flats, and used to just mess with the ponds in my neighbour hood fishing from shore.

But this this year I intend to try my hand at targetting some Bluegill and Bass on my ultralight set up.

They sure are a lot of fun.

Got real lucky so far with the quality of the Bluegills in the lakes I'm fishing. But I'll take luck any day!

I have never tried them either Jordan, or know anyone that has. I see them at W. Mart and have for a few years, so they must sell. I guess it has been one of those lures that catch fish, and not fishermen. Have you ever used the Catercrawler by Rebel? (think that's what it is called) That's another one I have not yet tried. Thanks for the tip on how to fish the crickethopper.

I have used it, but not with much success

The Bitsy Minnow was a killer at Richmond Mill for giant spawners a few springs back...Bruce got several over two on it, if I am not mistaken.
