Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Finally got out today a gave the fingernail spoonflies a try!!!!!! Beautiful day on the PRAIRIE light breeze about 20 and gusty!!!! 80 degrees + awesome winter day!!!!!!!!! Armed with these spoons and a 3 wt. flyrod medium action, fast action would work better!!!!!! They cast well and actually cast into the wind better than with the wind to you back!!!!! The one with dressing on the hook took fish better than those with out!!!!!! Looked good in the water on an intermediate sinking line!!!!!

Caught 20 to 25 crappie and 12 bass on all colors!!!!! I fished 6 of the flies in about 3 hours!!!!!!

Crappie were hitting on the drop!!!!!!!!

Bass were hitting it on the strip hard!!!!!!!!

This one hit the SWEDISH SORTOF PIMPLE!!!!!!
All and all it was a good day of fishing, I ended up with 8 crappie for the table!!!!!

While it was a fun day of fishing cannot consider this a success as a fly, YET!!!!
I caught lots of bass and crappie while fun the were no BLUEGILL, no GREENSUNFISH, no HYBRIDS orREDEAR!!!!! NOT A FAILURE TIL I GIVE UP!!!!!
JUST NEED MORE FIELD TRIALS!!!!!!

The split ring for the hooks and the barrel swivals between the leader and the tippet are a must!!!!!!

That is soooo cool. Just so happens I have some of those fingernails. I got an idea to change up the recipe a bit cause I don't have all that stuff you used.  Will see how it works. To the tying table I go.

good going -i picked up some ice blades as they are called.willow leaf blades with a crease where a hook can be soldered on.so i am tying to accomplish what you are from a different angletryed a few prototypes today ,not the action i want.thinking of lead taping the cupped side.oh well back to the fish tank,my lab.i picked up a cool little tool called a 1.5mm metal punch in the jewelry tools section at a craft store.i can put my foam popper bodies in it and punch a nice clean hole thru the body right on center.it is made to punch holes in thin metal ,so has no problem making holes on either end of the ice blades.i will try and get some pics up  soon as i tweek em some more

Greg, that is freakin' awesome! I'm with Leo, success is considered yours my friend!

Comment by Leo Nguyen on March 13, 2012 at 5:19pm

By the way Greg, what's the total weight for each spoonfly?

A catch of any species of your spoonfly is considered a success, but my gosh! You just started a brand new trend of low budget, slow sinking, homemade supreme stylish lure, my master!

Since the weather is getting bad, and my materials for the other flies are backed up, I'm focusing on making your versions now, based on the successful colors over here. I will humbly bow down to you as I have witnessed a new birth right of a brand new lure type, "The Femme Fatale SpoonFlies".
