Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I was just checking the "Google Analytics" stat sheet for www.bigbluegill.com and I noticed that we have some serious activity from California.  Can somebody please give me a little bit of information on this phenomenon?  Besides the fact that there are some bluegill there?  :-)

I wish I knew more. But to be quite honest, I've only had great fishing for big Redears, and Bluegills, during the spawn, and even then, only say, once, every 2nd or 3rd year.

Granted, I spent a lot of the last 14 years studying / targeting trophy Largemouth bass, instead. I guess if I had put as much time and effort into finding / catching sunfish, I'd have caught a lot more / bigger sunfish too, just as I did with the bass. A lot of it is just a matter of time and effort.

At any other time, in our large, deep man made resovoirs, the sunfish have a way of just disapearing.... at least from me !

Not sure Bruce but I talk about BB.C to anybody out here that is interested in catching Bluegill or Redear.

Yeah, we got the weather and all that. What I don't have is the time to go fishing, but I think I will have some in July. If I'm really lucky I may even get out to some of the Sierra foothills lakes to see if I can relieve them of a few bluegill. At the least, I'll head out to the delta, maybe take my float tube to Bethany if the wind forecast isn't bad (for those from out of the area, there's a huge wind farm on the hills around Bethany).

Florida has pretty nice weather year round also, but it seems like the Bluegill from there do not get as large as the California fish.  At least from all the photos that I have seen.  I don't recall seeing any 2 pounders from Florida, but in the 12 months, I have seen maybe half a dozen 2 lb class Bluegill caught, here in Southern California.  And those were all caught from the same lake!  And yes Jim, the facial hair, especially on the chin is what it's all about.  It attracts the larger panfish.

These California 'gillers really know their stuff! They got the jigs, they got the hats, they got the weather and they sure got the goatees!

 

Like I said before...I wish they all could be California gills!

Don't know for sure Bruce... we certainly have some avid Big Bluegill fisherman here in California...  Almost to the point of being 'Fanatical'... But we also have great weather... pretty much year round... so when others put their fishing gear to bed for the Winter (Ice fisherman exempted of course)... we have the opportunity to hunt our piscatorial dream of a 4 lb plus Lepomis Macrochirus to our hearts content. I have noticed that a lot of the various 'GROUPS' have not had posts recently... having just returned to Big Bluegill from an absence of about a year...  I was curious about that.  Wish you well Mate... and very glad to find big Bluegill alive and well... especially here in California.
