I've got to second David's observation about the power of the hit between "hand" bass and the bigger, mature, Bass. Most big fish just barely slurp it down; little ones hammer it and run like the blazes.

I call those "hand bass," because they will fit in your hand.
They will nail a fly like it was the only thing left to eat, and take off like a rocket. Often, big bass will just sip or gingerly pick up a small fly. But not these guys.
