Jim -I do know that some of the #20 and 22's are tied with a tread body.... I think the smallest hooks I have are size 16.

yeah david i got to get some stronger walgreen specials myself before i attempt this.i do have some size 16 and 18 flies i tied but never fished them.i will take pics if i can remember where i put them

that's what i am talking about jeffrey.have run into similar hatches, kind of like big skeeters.wonder what the larvae of these bugs look like.we get some mayfly hatches around here once in a while and if you are on the water when it happens you will literally catch any thing that swims.i had my kids with me when they were young on a great private pond during a hatch.i scooped up mayflies and put em on below a bobber and we caught everything, gills cats bass carp stripers.they almost got pulled in a couple times.one of the reasons i got into fly fishing.thanks for the pics jeffrey, most of us forget to photograph what the fish are eating which is more important to know than we realize

I'll have to use my optivisonrs but can go down to 18-20 still I think.

They'll go small even in warmer waters Jim when the opportunity presents itself like it did on September 15th, 2012......Thousands of these small insects were hitting the surface forming a slick and I fished shallow under the bugs for an amazing fishing frenzy....

now that we are all getting into tying mode here,i have been reading a lot about midges and chironomids and other almost microscopic things that bluegills as well as trout eat in cold water.if anyone wants to lets see how small we can go.size 18?20?22?i got some really tiny hooks i picked up,where i have no idea, gonna give it a shot and try after ice out
