Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I stopped today by a one-acre pond I manage and got to see the owner's son catch this dude with a custom rod I had made recently for him.

Funny you should mention that, Allen.  I put a game camera on this pond two summers ago, and a month later it got overrun by a swarm of ants - probably fire ants but I don't remember for sure.  I tried putting a new battery in it but it still wouldn't work.  My income is limited such that no sane person would be dumping the kind of money I have been, into ponds he didn't own; and because it's limited, there's always something I'd like to be doing to the ponds that I can't do, such that priorities have to be made; so fish food, more predators, and new, better-quality (different brand) feeders trumped game cameras.  Eventually I'd like to have a closed-circuit system put in, assuming profit begins at some point to get in the same ballpark with expenses.

I know this is almost a year old, but FWIW.....

Did you discuss with the owner about setting out some game cameras?  If the culprit stealing fish is on two legs, you can get some pics.

Thanks, David!  That fish came from my very best pond.  When Federico fished with me last summer, my scale was out of commission, but he thinks we had half a dozen northern bluegill, like the one above, that would've gone a pound-and-a-half or better in one morning of fishing, and thirty over a pound.

This year it will be better...

I know a trapper here in town who works for a client of mine, and he offered to loan me a trap and tell me how to set it...But he said there would be lots of scat around the pond, with fish scales in it, if it was an otter, and I couldn't find any scat and I walked all the way around the pond yesterday.

Thanks for the bail offer, Chris - nice to know at least I'll be able to visit my kinfolk before the trial:)

If this is being done by poachers. and you find him/her.

If you wind up in the clink. Give a holler I'll post your bail.

If it's an otter. I guess your on your own. Will the fish & game officers in your area

set traps for you?

ROFL Walt, if you find and identify that poacher, that poacher's life won't be something of a luxury after we get through with him. Forgive, but never forget.

There would have been dozens of fish this size and bigger in the pond this year, just based off what I saw at the feeder last summer.  I'm really sick about it.  If I catch the poacher y'all will have to come visit me in jail because it won't be pretty.
