Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Had a decent day of catching from my seat in The Blue Beast. Explored some new territory around the bay, although the early morning was spent hookin mostly "stick fish." A few small bass (one @ 2.5"!) and average bluegill were the reward for my initial efforts.

Later, I paddled across to the NE facing shore and things changed, immediately. Off a rip-rap bank I found a mess of these chunky RES's, along with some keeper bluegill.
I even put a respectable warmouth in my hand. A 2-3 mph breeze was blowing right into the bank, which probay helped.
I also ran a couple of limb lines off one of the points, but the catfish didn't like my squeeze tube bait. Next time I'll try some hot dogs or Berkley nuggets.
I've ordered some yoyo reels, too, and I'll give them a whirl.

Conditions: Dry, post front
Wind: mild, from west
Sky: High, blue with scattered cloud
Barometer: rising
Water temp: 73.5 degrees
Catching baits, in order of success:
1. Beetle Spin! These were hot!!
- White curly tail, first. This combo seems to do well at Lake Murray - it's kind of a go to for me. This particular one was lost to SOMETHING that just snatched it right off the line... probably a gar or a poorly tied knot.
I've caught plenty fish with that one. I'll make more.
- Dark blue body, w/crystal flash tail. This was another hot hitter.
2. Fire tiger Rooster Tail
3. Colorado Spinner, custom design
4 Red wiggler worm
5. Johnson Silver Minnow

Not a smoking day, but nice to be out. Met some others who limited out on shellcracker and brim, fishing the deep creek channel.
Home chores and work will keep me off the water until Saturday, at the earliest.
Hope you got some.

Believe it or not, that downed wood is a few feet from the rock bank - which was placed there as erosion control by the homeowner.
It looks rough and rugged here, but it's actually someone's back yard!
