Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Gills were on fire today! Water temps in the high sixties, bass on the nests, gills staging in shallow water......awesome!!

Stopped at an even dozen, all taken on jigs beneath a float, no tipping. half came from our ponds, and the remainder came from my BIL's place...no management, and no feeding in place.

Just a great day to be on the water!

Look at the quality of a haul. Easter celebration with some major actions.

Tony,
Marabou is the fluffy, wavy tail feather often applied to a bait to give it "motion" in the water.
I ask because when wet, it often becomes a linear mass when taken from the water - and looks just like the tail in the pic.

Our waters are still in the low 50's due to recent cold stuff.

Excellent lures from Dick and high quality fish from Tony's pond. Bravo!

David, I have a confession to make. Well, two actually. One, I don't know maribou from caribou, and two....I cut the tail off today after a string of short strikes. I'm not a big fan of tails protruding past the hook, as it gives the tentative fish something to grab onto without getting the steel, especially on a bigger jig like this 1/32 oz.....which is huge by my standards. When no protein is added, you oftentimes only get one shot at a fish....no "meat" to keep them coming back, so you need them to take the entire jig, not just the tail. I caught fish all week with it unmodified, but today was a different story....a field improvise was called for.

yep, the bigger, fatter fish are mine.

Is that a marabou tail, Tony?

I'm betting the fat fish are your fed ones...?
