Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is for John and Dick, I use a small hook and usually put of 2shrimp hook them right between the eyes all the way to the tip of the tail. It's a great bait for White Perch, Yellow Perch and Catfish at night. Gill's around here also love's them

Jim is right they turn a white color when their dead but they are good to use still, with one container of grass shrimp depending on how their biting will last maybe 2-day's as long you get home to put them in the fridge, once they go pink toss them in the garbage.

Grass shrimp are very popular in and around the Chesapeake region and the Delmarva area. they are an outstanding tipping bait for jigs or great on their own, like Angelo said. They sell them in local baitshops near tidewater regions. They are sensitive to the heat and tend to turn a milky white when they are dying.

Several of the jig patterns I tie are to imitate grass shrimp. Just about any fish in the system will take a grass shrimp. White and yellow perch guys really like em here in Maryland.

Never seen a grass shrimp around here I don't know if we don't have any or I just haven't seen any.

?! You eat grass shrimp? I can only imagine if I cook a pound  of them, they'll give me a bite or two. Hm..maybe ground dried grass shrimps with added roasted squid flavor? Oooo...now I'm freaking hungry!

You can do it anyway you like. I like going through the head all the way to the tail it's the best way so the perch don't steal your grass shrimp. When you can find them in school's it's a blast before your sinker even it's the bottom they are already pulling!!

Maybe I'll find some of those small ones ,tail hook a few of them(like Leo said) to keep them lively on a small light wire hook , use a small split shot to get them down below a small slip or fixed float .I first gotta catch these shrimp . I'm thinking of finding the Weeds first, that I 've seen them fall out of, and cranking up a bunch of weeds into the boat and search through the weeds for samples.

Hm..Wouldn't the shrimp survive much longer if you hook underneath the upper shell near the tail, preventing any puncturing of any vital organ? They should live pass the hour since there's nothing critical near the tail end, just like the earthworm.

I have only found that my local shop's carry them, I try northern NJ and the tackle shops don't know what I'am talking about lol. My cousin catches his own if you know where minnow's are at you mostly will find the grass shrimp also they still in the marshes in the tall grass down this way. I only use them for perch in the river tying on a half ounce sinker 1st and about a foot up the line tie on a hook with a leader get your line tight and watch it bounce lol. Live is the best they will try to jump out your hand they die after a while there on the hook.
