Do you love big bluegill?
Todays jig. I found the fish in deeper water, and like John Sheehan I was casting a LONG way to get there...having a heavy jig allows me to fish deeper water at a great distance, while maintaining a small profile is advantageous when the fish prefer a little offering, like they do in colder water.
Tungsten fills the bill nicely. I tipped with spikes, usually three at a time....

These jigs are infamous in getting fish of all sizes to strike. They work very well during the summer too. Just put a nice juicy crawler on it, and let the good time rolls.
Federico, tungsten jigs are usually available in most tackle shops up this way in the winter.... but I can see where your latitude might present a problem or two..... I like the Fiskas Wolfram series of jigs...you can find them here, in an assortment referred to as a Wolfpack. (they will sell you individual jigs also)...http://www.yourbobbersdown.com/handpaint.html
They are available in a variety of colors, finishes, and sizes.... Last year, I took a TON of fish on their ladybug pattern, until the hook finally broke at the bend..... (I've got more on the way now!)
Glad to hear you're having some success fishing ice jigs in open water Jacob...it can be a killer method at times!
Tony, where did you get the tungsten jig?
Really hard to state how well this approach works... Fished with a very similar jig in the wind last friday. It yielded a fish on every cast in the right spot. Bass crappie gills, big fish, small fish, it's what fish eat in the winter. I wouldn't have fished ice jigs in open water if it weren't for that maggot video you made a month or so ago. Thank you!
