Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

We got out Saturday morning on our favorite lake. It was beautiful but windy. The fishing was slow, we were anchored a few hundred yards from the landing, thinking about putting the boat on the trailer for the day (behind me in the picture). I noticed someone launching a sailboat. About as soon as the boat goes in the water it takes off with the wind with the guy standing there. The guy takes off and runs to the end of the pier as the boat goes by (no canvas up at this point). The wife and I watch as he dives into the water fully clothed and starts swimming after the boat. It's obvious that he's not going to catch it. I figured he would turn around and give it up, but no, he keeps going. Long story short by the time we got to him he was ready to go under.
The wife hung on to him while I drove him into the shore, there was no way I was going to be able to get him in the boat. He was ok after a bit and another fisherman retrieved his boat. So it ended up being an interesting day.

Believe it or not, the wife and I got to do this again today! Got out for the first time this year today. Water temperature was 56 degrees and the bite was tough. There was a group of sailing dinghies on one end of the lake along with a larger sail boat with a trolling motor. They all headed for the landing, but left behind one of the boats. The wind died and we could see the kid in it was really struggling with it. Then he stands up and falls in. He did have a life jacket on. So here we go again. Gather up the young man and the boat and drag them into shore. Turns out it was a group of Sea Scouts. Why he got left behind is beyound me. He was cold and wet but no worse for wear when we got him in.

Wow! I used to sail and I've had em do that with canvas up... But never just blow away away in the mast!
He'll start using a tether after this.

Good work and good thinking. He's a lucky sailor.

A tragedy was averted due to quick thinking and good judgement on you and your wifes' part! Bravo! Glad you were there!

Now I know why a throwable is required on board. Been carrying one for 20 years without ever using it. The wife was the trooper. She made a heck a throw with ours to the guy and then hung on to him at the boat till we got him ashore.

It's kind of a sobering experience. I remember telling the wife, "get the anchors up, this guy's not going to make it".
