John,  No I was actually fishing the South Fork of the Shenandoah upstream from the US211 bridge west of Luray.  I didn't catch any smallmouths but Red Breasted Sunfish are probably in the mix.  I took a few pictures, but wasn't too pleased with the result.  I will try to post some as soon as I figure out how.

The Morgan's Ford Lowater Bridge is on the main stem of the river and our son lives near Linden which is very close, and fishes it when he can.      He has caught many Smallmouths and a few Walleyes.  He also fishes with spinning and casting rigs,  I have introduced him to the dark side (Fly Fishing) however.

Bill-Did you fish any where near Front Royal and Morgan Ford Low Water Bridge ?Here's an old post from two years ago .I got to fish it once . Did you catch Smallmouth and Red Breasted Sunfish  when you fished the Shenendoah?Thats what I caught. I'd like to go back. http://bigbluegill.com/profiles/blogs/any-info-on-shenendoah-river

I guess you used a flyrod and Popping bugs .I used Twister tails and Rebel Wee R's on Spinning Rods.

I was in Virginia's Shennandoah Valley last week , and was only able to fish on Thursday for a couple of hours early afternoon in my 14' kayak.  Clear sky and 90+ degrees.   I caught about 15 Bluegills, including one Warmouth and one Redear from 5-7 inches.  I set up drifts to fish the shade beneath trees on both sides of the river.

I think Greg and Jim are bitten with the fishing bug like us and if they can find a way to make it happen they will spring, summer, fall and winter.

HEY DICK, GREG, AND JIM,

THANKS for all the insight and comments and think you are all probably right about your individual observations. Can't wait for Fall Jim . Hey DIck I think Ole Greg and Jim may be onto something about the fall . Glad to see it's not just me having trouble on the surface bite. Hopefully the temps will stabilize some and things will get back to normal around here for a change.
