As you know David, fishing often takes a good imagination and most importantly patience...Now this lure is always with me just in case......It paid for lunch one day last July when a fishing partner went there....He said I wouldn't catch a fish on it...He should have said the first cast, because on the third cast I also rubbed it in by asking him to get the net! He then asked the age old question... Do _____ ______ _________ _____? Can you guess?

It is an interesting take on the casting float, Jeff. I gotta give you credit for that. It makes me want to get a mess of worn out top-water lures, refurbish them and use them this way.

Nice.

Thanks for all the comments.....Fish have rolled on this set up and missed JB .......I have caught more bass on the Rapala than Gills.....The gills do go for the popper most often and I only use a slow presentation with many fish striking the fly during a "pregnant" pause. I personally have never experimented with a sinking fly.....I would call this an experiment or an idea.....I only tried it as pictured when there was tons of surface activity from bluegill and it was impossible to use a fly rod......It is a little awkward to cast but the rapala is perfectly balanced with the back hook removed...I tried it in my pool first, that's how I decided on the line length but anyone that wants to try it should try different things and see how it goes..........I was excited when I set it up thinking I might catch some doubles but to date that hasn't happened.......The best trip I ever had was in the Spring of 2008 during a "falling" water situation and I caught a 30 gill limit and many bass but most were under 14 inches (N.C. minimum), but still alot of fun........As David suggested, you could probably add a hook to the Rapala but I haven't tried it because my target species hits the fly and my goal has always been to keep the fly in the strike zone.....I take many photos but plan to add some videos this year (resolution) and this would make for good discussion.....This is a great site with lots of information sharing so I wanted to put it out there......Let us know how you do if you try it in your neck of the woods! Thanks again!

JB brings up an interesting point. What if you used a piece of small surgical tubing to hold the last hook straight out the back. Then tie a trailer leg of heavy mono to the bend in the last hook. Use, like, 15 or 20 lb test, and a stiff Improved Clinch knot to create a stand-away. Then tie your popper to that.

This way you can keep the last hook on the stickbait, but also keep the trailing popper out of the hooks. Steelheaders do a similar thing.

Thanks for the idea Jeff

Do you ever get misses from them hitting the tail of the Rapala? Or do they always go for the middle?

Ahhhh, a floating stick bait and popper one-two punch. Nice.

Right on Leo......I caught some small bass on that one this past Summer and it was beat up pretty good.....I need to retire it!

Hey, those are the Betsy's poppers! I got a container full of those little buggers. Love them. Looks like the popper on the left got some major workout in the past.
