Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The "Water Cooler" talk says go with the Charlie Bee Slider or Tiny Road Runner.

These little baits tipped with shiners have been producing Crappie in the Blackwaters of Carolina.

Now that's the kinda wife to have! I'm gonna call you, "Lucky Leo."

"Bug"? Nah..I got the disease that needs major scratching LOL My wife already asked, "Okay..well? Are we going to fish for trouts later or what?" I asked her, "Well, are you willing to get blown by wind from all direction, and smile with a mouth full of bugs and eyes full of sand?" She commented back, "Okay..have fun with mother nature with your buddies. I'll check back in the spring."

I know the feeling, Leo. And it sounds like you got the "bug" bad!

David, always great to see you inventive side. Truly, making baits and jigs are extremely therapeutic. As I'm typing, I'm letting my jig heads dry. Nail paint jet black, with gold glitters, and some with hologram reflectors. A few pink with some pre-filled hologram. Will be coating them with fishing gloss sealant soon. I'm preparing all my arsenal for the upcoming months of mayhem. Switching to fly tying in about 2 hours to make some of the lightning and spark bug designs that I got the specs from thanks to Greg McWilliams. Man, I'm no where coming close to shortage of ideas from this website. I'll be busy just play catchup for the next few decades.

Nice looking baits David, I find myself piddling in the Winter while things are slower  but the urge to fish every chance I get consumes me Spring through Fall......Looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate tomorrow so I'm happy to get out one more time in 2011......

I also like to paint eyes on them, as you can see. Sometimes I'll paint the heads, too, if I'm feeling in the mood.

I have about a gazillion different soft plastic jig bodies so there is never a shortage of something to add to them.

I've collected all the bits and pieces in bulk lots, so I probably have less than $.25 in each lure. I dont count my time spent on these, since I consider the crafting of them as 'therapeutic'

Ive been making my own spinner  jigs like these, mostly just to piddle.

I use:

- 1/32 oz. ball heads,

#14 swivels,

#0 Willow Leaf and #0-#00 Colorado blades

5mm split rings.

I first split one ring of the swivel and smash it flat with a needlenose pliers. Then I drill a small hole in the bottom of the lead head, insert the crunched swivel end and add a drop of CYA glue. When this sets I add the split ring and the blade and voila!

Ive also split the swivel ring as before but then shape it with round nose pliers to fit around the jigs collar. Then I adhere it just behind the jig head. Heres a few of those I've got handy:

We have a few little bait shops that barely hold on every year and they count on minnow sales to survive these winter months...Lots of minnows for Yellow Perch, White Perch and Crappie around the beginning of the new year...
