Do you love big bluegill?
Don was killing 'em today!Massive lepomii (sunfish), nice salmoides (bass), and the biggest ictalurid (catfish) I've ever seen on the fly - actually, the FIRST I've seen on the fly!And these are…Continue

I'll admit, I'm lazy. Why expend a lot of effort and gas trying to find ponds, when all you have to do is open up Google Earth, zoom in on your area, and start looking?I know that I've found a LOT…Continue

If the wrong chemical concentration is used, because they want to hurry and kill the algae, there goes the fishes.
I wouldn't be surprised if they just want to innoculate everything and start from square one. Easier to kill off everything, including the invasive vegetation, and start over, than balance things out in the long run. However, depending on the invasive species rooting, it will be hell getting rid of the deep rooted pests, or those that get reintroduced by migratory birds.
This pond has a big problem with algae. The Maintenance manager asked the grounds crew (contracted company) to dump a chemical into the pond that would kill off the algae. Ever since then, no one has caught any fish. I'm not sure what chemical they used, and whether or not that chemical is toxic to fish, in any concentration.
It is also possible that Maintenance has intentionally killed off the fish. The Bluegill in this pond are beginning to overpopulate. Many of the "little old ladies" insist that ALL fish be released; they consider the fish to be their pets. As everyone knows, you need some predation of some kind, especially in a small pond. If you don't have any natural predators, then Man has to do it. I know the Maintenance manager has been urging the folks that fish this pond to toss all Bluegill over the dam into the weeds. Maybe they killed everything off so they could start over?
Possibly starting up something new.
This is one view of the pond on property where I work. This was captured at the start of last year.
The sad part, is that I think the grounds crew killed all the fish in this pond. There used to be nice Hybrid sunnies, Bluegill, LMBs, Channel Catfish, and Grass Carp. I haven't caught a fish out of this pond in about 3 months, nor has anyone else.
GREAT IDEA'S AND COMMON SENSE DAVID , JIM , TONY AND SLEEPY !!!!!
I guess it comes down to the notion that try and treat someone elses property like it was your own, being respectful never hurts and can only help in the long run.....
Exactly, David...When you fish private water, you are a guest and are priveledged. Treat it as a blessing, and show respect and honor by obeying all rules, all the time. I never fish water without permission, and I always ask ahead of time, and try to contribute fillets or take the pond owners children fishing to get them started out right.
I have heard and seen many horror stories on 'presumed access' as folks just pile in with a dozen 'friends or relatives' and then there are tons of fish kept and trash left. It is any wonder at all that people allow, out of the goodness of their hearts, to permit folks to enjoy their property.
Respect, appreciation and honesty are paramount in gaining access and trust in private venues. Nurturing friendships never hurts either.
As a pond owner myself, I appreciate reading about you guys asking permission before fishing. You may not get the answer you hoped for, but at least you won't be looking over your shoulder every time you hear a noise while trying to fish.
I have let folks fish our ponds before, as long as they abide by the rules. But if I were ever to find someone fishing there without permission, I'm not sure the encounter would go smoothly.
Always respect the landowners property...and don't assume that just because a pond isn't posted "no trespassing" that it's alright to fish it....always ask first.
