LOL No Dick. It's not about being frugal. It's about being reasonable. Thing about it for a moment. How many supposed anglers out there actually fish with all the gear they have? How many family actually spend tons of money on certain gear, like fishing, snowboarding, etc. and actually use the gear until it breaks? Me, I know human's behavior, especially the younger generations. They are willing to buy the best for themselves, even though they just start out on a certain sport or hobby, and after a few times, they got tired of it, and sell their materials practically at 30% of what they purchased for. I'm an avid sport person that loves to be physical outdoor. However, purchasing gears that are completely brand new with exhausting my scavenging options first for the existing deals, that's not my nature. If I cannot find something that I need and want within 6 months period, then I may consider in getting it on sale or new.

Here's a recent example. Last winter season, I took my kids and wife up to the mountain, to reintroduce them into the snowboarding fun. My wife is still a snow bunny, not a full avid snowboarder yet. My kids rode along with me on my board, and they wanted more. Mommy can't help them, daddy can only teach one kid at a time on his board. So, I shopped on Craigslist and eBay for used boards, bindings, and shoes. Surely enough, I got all the gears for my family for 1/6 the costs of brand new gears, even with after season sales. They are now armed to the teeth with gears, ready for the upcoming dumps of snow. The gears were barely used. I mean, brand new awesome gears, barely used for 2 times. These gears were top of the line.

Now, for fishing. Same thing. I purchase used gears to teach my kids to fish with. I knew they would destroy these gears, so, I bargain shop at the local yard sales and swap meets. Surely enough, old Zebco and Shakespeare rods for $1, or good Shimano and Pleugers for $5 and $10. Reels for $2 and $3. Lowest I could haggle down was $1.50. A nice Cabelas fly fishing vest for $2. Yep..$2, which was worn for 5 times, and tossed into the corner somewhere.

Plenty of bargains out there. It's just how you want to search for them, and know exactly where to search it at. I like to search for sport gears near the rich folks' places and universities. Lots and lots of opportunities. Fishing gears, best to search for them at swap meets and yard sales posted on the weekly papers.

Leo I thought I was frugal and knew where all the cheap stuff was you'll have to enlighten me.

I don't know Dick. Rick got himself some fancy foam at the General Dollar store. You can get yourself some nice handful jigs to dress things up for a buck. Some fly tying threads for a buck each..Garage sale bargain shopping, and haggle the yard seller until they bring it down to a buck. I'm good at that.

Comment by dick tabbert on November 10, 2012 at 10:40am

That's a good way to think Leo except I don't think they make anything for a buck anymore.

Comment by Leo Nguyen on November 10, 2012 at 10:37am

I wouldn't mind. Hey, in this economy, any discount helps. I'll take what ever discount they can hurl at me. A buck saved is a buck spent on fishing gears.

VINCE , OOOOOOOOOOOUTSTANDING ONE! DO you also write notes on your hand like I do? CAN'T LOOSE THE NOTE THAT WAY unless of course your hand falls off! Problem with that one now is that my hands bruise so easy cause of aging the skin gets thinner and leaves bruises . That was another thing I asked the Doc about the other day and he explained it to me that way and was laughing. I told him I was really glad I brought so much humor into his life with my problems..........

I guess I should put another comment here and that is that I gave serious consideration to the idea of the group being named slightly differently: OGGWA !!!!!! THAT TRANSLATES INTO "OLD GEEZERS WITH ATTITUDE"!!!!!!! I DON'T LIKE TO PUT UP WITH MUCH nonsense from the younger crowd on the road or in life either..........
