I am a kayak panfisherman... I use a 10’ Ascend Sit on Top.  Been going on TakAttacks for the last 4 yrs. Nothing better than getting into those hard to reach spots!!

havn't been on bbg for a while but gills still my favorite and now been kayak fishing for a couple years now and loving it... had a great year on gills last year. have a ocen kayak sit on top...will try to post a picture or two...

And that lake wasn't all the big, either.  Perfect kayaking lake.  With $5K invested in just the yak and the sonar, for that kind of money, why not buy a decent jonboat?

I could see that kind of setup if he was fishing a bigger lake for Striped Bass.  Open-water pelagic species, etc.  But needing the gear to see each fish before you even cast?  Sheesh.

SMH Looks like he depends on too much on his tech and not his wits. He may not have experiences in chasing LMB in that area. However, you're dead on. Larger LMBs chase bait balls in open water, with greater chance to land meals, and less confrontation with predation. But $3K on the sonar system? Freaking crap. I can understand you use that to chase open coastal waters, but in the freshwater areas?

"Minimalist" - ROFL!  Yep, that describes me easily.

Down in OK, I saw a guy with a $2K Hobie PA that had a $3K sonar on it.  BIG color screen, down-scan and side-scan.

I was catching more Bass than he was.  I tried to tell him the LMBs were targeting bait in open water.  He insisted on fishing structure and cover.

Apple-to-Apple, Helix 5 with charting will win by a small margin, with all the possible upgrades and add-ons going from yak to boat. But, I'll favor the Elite 7X with TotalScan for yak purposes. Many times over, the Helix failed to properly compile the slow creep info over the Elite 7X.

Tech is fun. Tech + Fishing is exciting. Tech + Fishing + catching big ones has no price.

wow some great info concerning the nav lights guys... love the science and engineering in fishing!

i love it when tech and fishing mix!... i went to a local sporting goods store where they had the Helix on display... i just love these units!!! ... the five inch display even looks great. i'll tell ya what the 9" display stole my heart... Autochart live on the unit!. a unit that size would find its way on the jon boat never in the kayak. the 5 or 7" would work great in a kayak. the 5" unit with side imaging around 500.00.

David, Allen is one of those "I fish by instincts" minimalist LOL. But fishing is all about instincts based on evaluation. We tend to go a bit more on the tech side for the fun of things.

Eagle CUDA 300.  Cost me about $80.  Greyscale, 2D, very basic.  I rarely see fish.  I use it to see how deep the water is, whether it's a soft- or hard-bottom, weeds, drop-offs, bait, etc.
