Ok, I've been fishing one of these for a couple weeks now, and I've caught all sorts of fish on it. Bluegill, Green Sunfish, BG x RE Hybrids, and a LMB. Because of the spun hair head, this fly…Continue

I did a fly-tying marathon last night. Tied up a Brassie (to go with the other three that I tied up the previous day). Tied two Zebra Midges w/ black thread and a silver wire rib. Tied two Zebra Midges with red thread and a silver wire rib. Tied up three Chironomids with amber body, peacock-herl thorax, and a bead head. All of these were on size 12 caddis hooks. Also tied a Chironomid to match the other three, but used a size 12 3xl curved hook, and added a silver wire rib.
My eyes are still crossed.
Those might be a little on the "big" size for those patterns, but that's the smallest hook I have right now.
Ok, used one of the Chartreuse w/ olive grizzly hackle Greasy Monkeys that I tied last night. Caught two big Hybrid Sunnies and a Bluegill on it.
I tied some Greasey Monkeys also.Anxious to try them.
Finally caved and tied some Greasy Monkeys tonight. I don't have any flourescent hackle, so I used some olive hackle that I have. Tied two each of olive w/ black stripe, and chartreuse w/ black stripe.
Now I just need to fish them.
That makes a lot of sense!
Allen, Instead of wrapping the Chaneil and then the hackle!! Tie in the Chaneil and the hackle pull the stem of the hackle laying it on top of the chaneil!!!! Stroke the hackle so the fiber are sticking straight out!!! Catch the chaniel and hackle with hackle pliers and twist!!!!!!!!! Wrap it forward and tie off!!!!! The hackle will be bound and should not break it will also change the look of the bugger!!!!!
Yes, I do use head cement, after I whip finish the fly. Once the hackle breaks, I haven't noticed any further degradation of the fly, nor have I noticed a loss of effectiveness.
I'll have to tie up a few with the wire last, and see how they fish.
Allen, I would do the wire last if I were using it on my wooly bugger. when I wrap thread to secure the hackle I wrap over the hackle then a few turns in front and then over the hackle again before I snip it off. Are you using head cement (nail polish, super glue)? Mine seem to last through quite a few fish, a tree or snag seems to get em long before they tear up.
Got a question on the life-span of some flies.
I've tied several Wooly Buggers of a couple different sizes. One thing I've noticed, when I'm on a hot bite, is that I can only catch about 6 or so Bluegill and/or Hybrid Sunnies before the Buggers starts to fall apart. Usually, all the happens is that the hackle breaks, usually near the head of the fly, and unravels to form a long grizzly tail.
Is this normal?
I've been tying my Wooly Buggers with lead on the hook, chenille wrap, wire rib, finished with the hackle. Should I reverse the last two, ad wrap the hackle, then finish with the wire rib?
Well, after loosing my only size 8 BH Wooly Bugger to a Hybrid sunnie and a cattail yesterday, last night I tied up six size 8 buggers. All are BH, with black maribou tails, and have brass wire ribs. Two are olive/gold chenille, two are olive chenille, and two are a light brown chenille. Each pair has one done with olive grizzly hackle, and the remaining bugger out of each pair has grizzly hackle.
I should have plenty of time for field trials (pond trials?) this afternoon.
Personally, I like the look of the ones done with the grizzly hackle. When it comes to the chenille color, after it's all done, it is really hard to tell the difference.
I might have to get some brass bead chain and try some bead chain wooly buggers.
Anyone ever try a size 6 Wooly Bugger? I've got the hooks, just haven't tied one up to see if it would work. Something that size would probably be best used for LMBs, catfish, etc.
