Might get one of these in a 2wt. Does anyone have any thoughts on the cork reel seat?

Cabela's TQR/Prestige Plus Fly Combo

I been looking into getting a TQR 2wt until I read all the negative reviews on it mainly the Reel seat breaking, ''I turned my back'' . Now I have my eye on a TFO Signature series 11 6' 2wt.

Thanks Angelo, i was looking into getting one but wasn't sure of the reel seat, but that sounds about right. I reckon i'll probably hold off on it.

When I click the link, it says the page is currently unavailable...

copy and paste that bold text i posted. i don't know why the link is like that.

Interesting little thing. A 5-ft 2-wt would be nice for those of us who can't afford something like an  Fenwick FF535 (ppl asking over $400 on eBay for those things now!), but like Angelo said, the number of reviewers who had problems with the cork reel seat makes me wary. Several reviewers also said you have to overline it with a WF3F and that it's a poor short-range caster. Warranty is only 10 years, FWIW.

The other thing I found odd is that amongst all the marketing fluff, they don't seem to make any mention of the action, but if it needs to be overlined to load well, I'm guessing it must be pretty fast.

I haven't had it out yet to try it, but I bought a Redington Classic Trout 2-weight 7.5 foot on clearance for less than the Cabela's rod and everyone says they're wonderful. Gotta get it on the water soon and see :-)

Was it a rod/reel combo? Where did you get it? And if you don't like how it is let me know and we can work something out ;-) haha

I got it at fishwest.com about 6 weeks ago. I think it was their last one maybe, and I only got it because I didn't see it listed on the web site but I called them on the phone and asked if they had any 2 or 3 weights and they looked and said they had one of each. I took the 2-weight, and the price was so good ($82/each) that I added a Classic Trout 4-weight to my order even though I didn't really need it :-)

The Redington Tempt is the follow-on to the CT but it's $169 and because it's new, list price seems to be the word everywhere. The CT model was on close-out all over the place a couple months ago. There are a number of 4-weights and 5-weights still on eBay (none as cheap as what Fishwest had them for, though), but the 2-weight and 3-weight ones seem to be fairly rare.

I didn't get a combo, just threw a cheapo Crystal River reel on it (about $15, IIRC). Unless some crazy big fish happens along I'll probably never see the backing again, so I can live with the cheap reel for a while :-)

A Redington CT reel would be nice to use on it, but those things almost never show up used, it seems.

So JB, are you hitting the dams and lakes in SD this year on your boat, or planning to have fun on a float tube? Careful what you wish for..SD waters tend to generate unknown monstrous fighters when you drop your guards.

I plan to get the boat out this summer. Want to do some refinishing and what not, and the OB needs a tuneup, I'm sure.  Want to tube the San Diego River soon, scouted a location on my lunch break today and some some bluegill and some bass (a number of fingerlings, a few in the 8-9" size, one that probably went a foot, and one in the 2-3 pound class.

Lake Murray is a decent tubing lake, but I definitely want to get my boat in it, too. Lake Cuyamaca is also a place I like to fish, but it's about a 50-mile one-way. Hope to try Imperial Valley this summer, maybe extract some tilapia from the Salton Sea. So many plans, so little time :p

My wife wants to hit Salton Sea again this warmer months. She wants to get the experience of millions of those hungry mouths jumping at anything and everything we throw at it. The best months are the warmest months, which happens to be between July and September. It's also a killer since the temperature soars up in the 115° to 125°. Everything has to be under the shade, including the rods.

Try to keep up the news with Lake Miramar, San Vincente Reservoir (something like Perris), El Capitan Reservoir, and Lake Jennings. Those are prime choices. You know, you're sitting on prime California Aqueduct hunting ground for insidious fighting stripers..right?

What's your take on the safety of eating Salton Sea tilapia? Some ppl say "No way!" and others toss them in the ice chest.  I don't mind fishing in the desert heat, but yeah, wouldn't want my rod to melt in the sun LOL.

I don't think any SD County BOW has stripers; AFAIK DVL and Perris (does it have them?) are the nearest places. A legal striper could probably destroy any reel I own, anyhow LOL. San Vicente is aquaduct-fed but I haven't heard of stripers being in there; it'll be a couple years yet before it re-opens, anyway - and yeah, can't wait for that. San V. used to be a very good BG lake back when. After lying closed for most of a decade because of the dam raise project, it should be crazy when it re-opens.
