That'll get'em! I love the spider pattern legging of some of the rubber legs these days. Much more realistic.

Nice top water flies. I've made them with 4 to 8 legs and they all seem to catch fish.

Yeah, these tipping flys are meant to be tipped with maggots or whatever. They could be used for top water, but the bait usually makes them sink.

Is that Damon Toney, Mr. BWL?

I’ve tied these under the guise of “slow sinking” spiders.
I added a piece of Krystal flash with the legs, so it’s 4 rubber legs paired with Krystal flash legs.
I woulda called em Palmetto Bugs, but some guy has them on eBay under that name. So I went with “TRIPLE S Flies.”

That's me.

...David... little by little i'm learning... your site Palmetto Fly n Fish  has generated a bit of interest in tying some flys with me... so we'll see how far this goes.

Thanks guys…I’ve been using bulk flys under the slip float tipped with waxies … I think they were 25 to a pkg for around 10.00 from walmart eagle claw brand bought just over a year ago… the local bait store want 1.00 to 2.00 per fly and I tag about 25 gills per fly before it’s a mess.

I’ve been unhappy with the hook selections and sizes… some were way to small costing me a very large Pumpkinseed at the boat.

I was down to my last fly the other day and I had to come up with something quick so that night with the available materials I had I tied this up.  I used  the bait the following day, the day before the full Moon and did very well with  it. then tagged a Master Angler couple days later.

I believe the combination fly and waxie tip excites the bluegill more than a plain hook and live bait.  A dry fly combination with nite crawler bits proves to be heavy on the hook.  The dry fly GULP waxie combination undulates and dances in the water current around the split shot underneath the slip float…  Drives them crazy.  There are days that my buddy earl will out fish me with live bait.  The two methods have proven to be close in fish production so I choose the artificial bait every time.  It’ Just my thing.  The GULP waxies is a bit more buoyant in the water than a nite crawler bit.

Testing in the lake the combo sinks a bit quicker than a dry fly built with feathers. I am now playing around with foam spider bodies instead of the chenille.

...one day i'll learn to tie with feathers... LOL

Feather control tying Catskill-style dries is a skill I haven't mastered yet.  Don't feel bad.

...Damon i saw your vid on you tying a tipping fly... gave me some incentive to tie my own,

Yeah, thx, man. For me I find the fewer materials the better, but for my flies I sell I pretty them up a lot. For me one material is plenty.

Remember the old saying, "Ugly flies catch fish.  Pretty flies catch fishermen."
