Thanks for all the comments, guys. I bet Slip Sinker has the right idea on the line. I've tried all kinds of variation in the retrieve that do not consistently solve the issue. I'll switch the lure over to another rod with lighter line on it and see what happens.

judging from the picture its looking like you are using to thick of a line... from here it looks like 10-0# mono... if you like to use mono and fish for the panfish with this type of lure (looks like Strike King's Bitsy Minnow in fire tiger) knock it down to 4-0# mono or better yet a more supple line like braid or Nanofil. The thinner the line up front the more action you’re going to get out of that lure. That style of lure is very popular with me and have no problem reeling it in with my 5-6 ft Micro UL JIGGING ROD W/4-0# BRAID, casts a mile and has a tight wiggle right from the start.

Sometimes a small snap might help...

Carl mentions a bait dropper added to this type of lure... i think it works great... ive been doing something a little different... i use a small chain hook dropper outlined in ULTRA LIGHT "Bait Dropper Chain 'n Crank literally drives them nuts!

i feel you will get immediate positive results if you drop down your line size first...

good luck

... and very nice fish by the way.... i love the P'seeds

on the tracking issue;; like Jim says;; trry a slower  retreive first;; then; if that doesnt work;; try it faster  in the beginning; then slow down the  retreive.   often;; as soon as something hits water;; a gill will slap at it;; using its tail.  one way to ;; play then;; is to use Jim Gronaw;s tail gunner tactic!!  bet you might get more hook ups then!!

Great looking seed!

For tracking issues, try to see if a slower retrieve doesn't help to improve the travel issues and permit more hookups. Small crankbaits can be tricky like that.

This Spring I'm dabbling in hard plastic baits. This tiny crankbait gets the BG. Shown is probably my personal best, based on size and appearance. I've also gotten perch and a bass on it. No crappie yet, which I think is strange.
I'm having two problems: Often , the lure does not initially start wobbling right when I reel it in. Many times, I am 1/3 of the way thru the retrieve before it starts tracking right.
The other thing is I often get swipes at the bait just the moment before it breaks the surface and comes out of the water, generally too late to hook up. Am I doing something wrong, to not attract the strike sooner?
