Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is the only bluegill that I have ever caught from the cold, waters of Northern Lake Michigan. Early on a late July morning (during the one week the water was warm and calm), I casted a grasshoper hanging about four feet beneath a float. I kept the bail open (so I wouldn't disturb the position of the bait) as I walked back to where I had my gear. When I closed the bail and looked at the water, I didn't see my float anywhere. Instinctively, I reeled in the slack and set the hook. The fish I had on felt strong enough to be one of the abundant smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) found in Lake Michigan. When I got it in, I just sat there and stared at it for what must have been twenty seconds. I quickly rode home to wake up my brother who later took this picture of me holding my catch.

They say if they all were over 5#, we would never get a glimpse of them

Great story to go with the catch. They can be quite a fighter. The bigger they are, the harder they will battle with you.
