Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Plan on get'n a new tackle box just for gills & bream, nothing big & bulky but enuff room to hold a decent selection,  most of my BG tackle is a small collection of rubber grubs, long shank hooks, a few floaters & beatle spins, since most places around here cater to the bass fisherman its slim pick'ns for anything for a dedicated BG box, probably gonna order most from online.

What would you consider your must haves/sure nuff BG gitters, what size & colors & where can they be found ??

Thanks in advance.

Johnny, had the same problem finding the right box, finally found one a few years back with 3 pockets on the outside, it's just a little bigger than a 6 pack. I keep 2 fly reels and a spinning reel in the main compartment, and a plano box with tackle, the pockets I also put plano boxes in . my main box I customized to keep my quills in, and I used clear plastic cigar tubes to keep shot and hooks in that fit in the compartment of the plano box, everything is organized and the other boxes are for spoons, spinners, and small crankbaits for smallmouths. I cant believe I can get so much stuff in such a small box and it be so ready at my fingertips, and the crazy part is I 've got room for  more stuff !  I know how hard it is to get a box that will fit your needs , but right now I couldn't be happier.  Good Luck finding yours .   LOFR

johnny- im like lofr;; I picked up a soft side tackle bag ( about like lofr;s 6 pack)  from wal-mart;; it was cheap; around 10 bucks I think;; has 3 or 4 pockets on the out side you can really load up!!   the big compartment; can handle  I think 3 or 4 good size plano boxes  that can definitely handle any thing you want for jigs; flies; hooks sinkers;; you name it!!

#10 bead heads and silent stingers #12 bead heads and silent stingers and a few spiders. u can get those from blutos baits.

I bought a heavy-duty outdoors-type kid's backpack a couple years ago.  It's big enough to hold up to three big Plano boxes, with lots of other pockets for other stuff, like floats, stringers, cast net, etc.  I tend to carry A LOT of stuff when I'm bank- or wade-fishing.

As far as lures go, think small.  Mepps spinners in size 0 are great.  I also make a close imitation of that, as well as some bigger inline-spinners that are intended for LMB, but will catch 'gills (how they get that size 6 treble in their mouth I'll never know....).

Try to find the smallest minnowbait that Rebel makes.  I think it's 1 1/4" long.  If you use a snap-swivel to attach the lure to, that minnow will have a slight negative buoyancy.  I usually find those at Wally World.  Also, Rebel 7700 series crawfish crankbaits are hard to beat.  There are a variety of colors, and two different lip designs, so pay attention.  The bigger lip is a deep-diver.

If you have a Dick's Sporting Goods nearby, see if they have any size 4 Rapala X-Raps.  Suspending minnowbait cranks, and they are small enough for 'gills and other sunnies to hit.  I have one; I would like some more in the colors I typically fish, but those are hard to find in that size.

Strike King Bitsy Minnows!  Shallow-diving crankbaits, get the colors that work in your area.

I do a lot of walking, so I opted for a backpack as well. Mine is fit up pretty much as Allen describes.
Another I've used is a small luggage carrying bag, found at the Goodwill. Cost a couple dollars.
As for what to put IN it, that's is wide open.
All the usual things you mention, of course.
I've also had good catching on micro spoons, small trout spinners and flies.

Ya'll I never even thought about a small back pack, mite have to give one a try, one of my all time fave boxes was the double sided plano's, I still have my old yellow(ish) with amber lids, it could hold the world, was about (??) 12" X 10", put all my hard baits (rapala minnows, assorted spinners, jitter bugs) on one side & soft rubber baits & hooks on the other, with the clear amber lids you could see anything you wanted before even open'n it up, it finally dry rotted & the lids cracked from age.

Thanks for the heads up on what to fill it with also, was look'n last night at some goodies a fellow member had mentioned, most of the small jigs & spoons ya'll use I've never even heard of but intend on find'n out more of them.

Also want to include a space for flys & poppers, top water action is just too fun, love watch'n gills tackle one off the top.

Do you have a fly rod, or will you be doing the "float and fly" rig with an UL spinning rig?

Johnny ,
I likes my old Plano 1122 so much I bought a used off eBay when my son broke mine.
Does it look familiar,

I would recommend  Asso 1-2 lb test line , #10 Drennan  micro shot,  #12 Aberdeen hooks and Bentley Micro Panfish floats. I do most of my fishing fixed line and would recommend a really good telescopic pole or two ( 10 to 16 feet). Good poles run about $5.00 -$15.00 ( Mr Crappie,Shakespeare, BnM). Specialized poles run about $75.00 ( Diawa, Nissin).  Nothing better for exact bait placement. Bait is a simple hot dog from the dollar store or micro ice fishing plastics. Both work very well. I'm a big fan of simple. Every thing fits into a kid's soft lunch box.
