Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I CAN SMELL GRANDMA'S COOKING RIGHT NOW !!!! WHEN IN MY YOUTH , a couple hundred years ago we would sometimes go out to Grandma's place in Seatonville Illinois over christmas vacation .

While we were out there it was always bitter cold and snowing of course. THere was a big hill that went down over the crick and it was the old fashioned cement sidewalks poured in 4 foot sections around the curve . The hill itself was a block long and never seemed to end and we could really get going on our sleds as long as you took a long run and flopped down at just the right moment .
When we'd get done having fun for a few hours we'd head for Grandma's house to get warmed up . THe old wood burning stove kept the kitchen and pantry relatively warm , seeing as how there was no central heating in the old house. The front room, parlor , was heated though by an old oil burning furnace for just that room . It had the TV, BIG COUCH , GRANDMA'S RECLINER, A SMALL END TABLE, AND ONE OTHER RECLINER , and the furnace of course. It had beveled glass french doors and enough carpets on the floor to keep ya warm against the winter living outside the front room windows.
Her favorite shows were Ed Sullivan, Rawhide " with Roudy Yates" , played by Clint Eastwood, and mister Gill Favor of course as the trail boss. Also Lawrence Welk and his orchestra.........
After watching all her favorite shows she'd say DAVY IT'S BOUT TIME FOR BED , and off we'd go and get under the endless mound of quilts and comforters stacked , seemingly 3 feet high on both beds to stay warm at night. I'd dream alot out there .
Breakfast was always the highlight of the trip . She was always up before me and I'd wake to her humming or singing with the radio going in the kitchen. I can still smell the old matches she'd light to get the kindling going in the wood stove to cook breakfast on . She'd have the kitchen warmed up in nothing flat and a food going in the pan. Everything was cooked in one pan on top the old stove. Bacon or Ham would go in first , then the eggs . Fried the old fashioned way with the edges curled up and black like black lace . Then the toast made of home made bread bout an inch thick and llllllllllots of butter on it with homemade Strawberry preserves , the kind that makes your teeth hurt it's so cold coming outta the fridge....
If ya never ate like this ya haven't lived and it was off to the hill for some fun after that . Usually a week or so of that and back to school , yyyyyyyyyuck...........

AH ! , A wood burning stove , the warmth, the smell of a crackling fire, the aroma of whats on top, these are not old memories for me , I have one at the Crappy Cabin, we even run kerosene lanterns to add to the ambiance, the grill on top of the stove use to be the grill used by a trout dock to do shore lunches on the White River, if that grill could talk, It has taken on a second life at the Crappy Cabin and we are making memories every time we go,  and because we are getting old and forgetful , we have been writing our adventures on the inside wall  to jog our memories, cant wait to be back up there next weekend.  LOFR

Thought yall might want to see a breakfast at the Crappy Cabin too. LOFRLook , Breakfast includes cresents ! Here is a photo of some wild hogs that got in the trap that will end up being Breakfast Sausage  and Gravy at the Crappy Cabin.    LOFR

HEY LOFR THANKS FOR PUTTING THE PICS UP OF THE CABIN CHOW !!!!!!!!  WHAT MEMORIES YOU MUST HAVE OF THIS PLACE !!!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN FOR THE PICS...

lord of the fly rods-- that is truly awesome buddy!! love that style of living!  great food-- wild game for table fare-- and fishing!!  wish I was there!!!

I have yet to remember anything that my grandma cooked. It may have been when I was two, but nothing of grandma homecooking. Oh wait..grandma was served hand and foot by her servants. Well, duh..no wonder.

However, plenty of mom's cooking, follow by, "You better wake up, before the foods get cold." I would reply, "I just want to sleep a bit more mom." She didn't reply, however, there was either a sharp intense pain on my butt or a nice cold bucket of ice water as a pre-morning shower. Ahhh..good old days.
