Lemme guess - ebay?

Dear God, now I "need" tungsten beads? Agghh!

GREAT LOOKING BUGS JIM !!!!!!!!!! YOU SHOULD POST THESE ON THE MAIN PAGE BUDDY. I KNOW WHERE YOU CAN GET ALL THE BLACK hackle ya want in small size. Not cheap but goes a long way ......ANGLERS WORKSHOP WOODLAND WASHINGTON STATE and ask for Rick and tell him I sent ya , he'll take care of ya .360-225-9445...........

Thanks Jim something more I'll have to check into appreciate your input.

Randy, I recently read a nice article in In-Fisherman magazine about using tungsten beads on fly hooks, and tying nymph patterns on the resulting "micro-jigs".  It's supposed to be a great way to fish.  I've been meaning to do this, but haven't bought any of the beads yet.  Like you said, it gets expensive, quick.

Tony's reply pretty much sums it up.....I will add that because of the density of the jig when a Gill...or anything....hits it you will know it instantly. I love the feel it transmits and that feel also lets you stay in contact better with the jig head. Recently I was crappie fishing with the Trout Magnet in my favorite crappie hole. I had on the Trout Magnet jig head and a split shot about 18 inches above the jig. A side wind kicked up big time and caused that dreaded bow in my line...plus I had lost feel of the jig head. I put on a 6mm tungsten jig head with my Trout Magnet body and soon limited out. Because of the cost of tungsten I had some 1/8 ounce jig heads made with a #8 steelhead hooks in them....1/8 ounce jig heads with a small hook are hard to find. But it in no way is a good substitute for the tungsten....just does not provide the feel. It is a great way to fish...but as I said....it is an expensive addiction...LOL.

Regards

Quick Question

Can you add the beads to a standard hook ( clamp on to hook) or do you need to tie them on like a fly.

Thanks

JDA

Joe, it's just like tying a Bead-Head nymph.  In fact, that's basically what you're doing, it's just that the bead is a much denser metal, and sinks much more rapidly.

You can probably do this with fly hooks, jig hooks, or possibly any other hook you have.  It just depends on the size of the hole in the bead.

allen,you can also put the bead on straight pin.cut it to 1/2 hook length.i use a size 12 jig hook and lash the pin to the hook with the bead just ahead of the hook eye.then tie what you like;

Okay, you use the pin as a support arm?

allen see my reply to dick above.they are not that much if you buy 100.about 12 cents apiece.i also get mustad 12s on ebay for about 3-4 bucks per hundred.there are places that sell beads and hooks by the 1000.maybe a few of us should get together and buy in bulk .believe me i have a lot of expensive and beautiful hooks.they cost so d##m much i leave em in their fancy little packs so i don't waste them.i try to keep my flies under 20 cents each.that way i can be reckless with em.the hackle feathers are killing me.i am seriously contemplating livestock auctions.feathers and fried chicken

I hear you on the price of feathers.  Have you looked at the really high-grade dry-fly hackle?  You may be spending upwards of $90 for a neck, but supposedly, you can tie hundreds of flies with it.

i know allen even the cheap necks are crazy.i had to stop selling on ebay as i ran out of feathers and cant find any resonable replacements.decent black hackle is key to my best flies.i am not kidding about killing some roosters for the feathers.got a animal flea market a little south of me .my buddy got ten pheasants for 6 dollars a piece.
