Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I caught my first bluegill with my fly rod last night. It was a nice 9" male, I caught with a san juan worm. I also caught a tree, my shirt, almost my face and ear and almost tripped over my line on some rocks and fell in the pond. I provided good entertainment for Old Bald Guy who I was fishing with. It was a good time and I'm looking forward to some top water action soon. Oh yeah I forgot, I also cast half my rod into the water twice. I felt like I was in the middle of a tornado. I would say it was controlled chaos but there wasn't much control going on. GOOD TIMES!!!

HA! if you only knew how familiar that sounds to EVERY fly fisherman out there. its funny you know....people have this idea that fly fishing is this graceful sport, but there are definitely times it looks like a one man water rodeo! welcome to a great corner of the fishing world!
I will be the first to say that it anything BUT graceful last night. I made myself leave the UL rod at home so I wouldn't be tempted to give up on it.
Congratulations! That's awesome!
welcome to the club !! nice to know i am no longer the only member ...
Lol!...Reminds me of years ago(35 years ago or so) when I was first "into" learning flycasting......felt a "sting" on my neck and a superficial 3" long graze from the bettes popper....UFFDA!...changed my style of casting from that day on...lol!.....also nailed my ear lobe once!....Arghhhhh!
That sounds very familiar to me. Oh and I'm very new as well. Last night actually. I caught my first Bluegill on a fly a week or two ago and since then I have totally fallen in love with fly fishing for them. I went to a small private pond on the 4th expecting to catch Bluegills and caught nothing but Bass! I couldn't believe it. They loved the emerger. It was soo much fun! Bluegills are my favorite. Oh by the way you're in good company with hooking everything. I can't tell you how many flies I've popped off. Welcome!
