Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have very limited experience with the fly rod but enjoy the technique .I would like to see folks list their top fly choices . I have caught Gills and Red Breasted Sunfish on Poppers and Beaded Nymphs, but would like to score on Streamers, and other Wet and Dry flies and learn the Art and Craft more .I hope to learn a lot from you guys!

I'll be interested to hear your take on the MCGinty.

McGinty's are good. I do a simple soft hackle version. Mine is wet but dries work nicely as well

Just discovered I ran out of yellow chenille for tying the McGinny so I used wet twisted yellow marabou.  Half the fun of fly tying is ingenuity.

I tried twisting some yarn stuff today and it went into a million frazzles. I think I need a lot more practice.

it depends on what is in your local water. a grass shrimp pattern is not very useful where i live but a tiny crayfish is.black and yellow seem to work any where.i live close to the great lakes and the  IL river system .i have been doing great on black, yellow,or black and yellow poppers.too much green slime to fish nymphs right now.they are done spawning and holding on the weed edges.the mcginty is a classic.i would put a black hackle collar on it as a weed guard and give it the CRUNCH factor i believe makes hold the fly longer

Good comments, Jim.

I lost another one of your poppers to the Gods, today. DINAH!

i ran out of black yellow my self.tried orange black and they would not hit it.go figure.i stopped selling them as i can't compete with the chinese stuff and most people can make their own easily enough.

Yepper....I like that yaller.

I've never seen micros like yours, though.
I think it was Tom Keith that said , "Don't insult the fish with anything
less than your best."
If you ever make another batch, count me in, .

I have a pic in my page that shows flies that I feel that I can catch gills on 90% of the time.

seems you have a variation of the mcginty,i will post some picks of a real easy dry fly that can be made in any color and takes about 2 minutes to tie.

looking forward to it. I like EZ and fast
