Thanks Vince! I was sure my dad would hook somebody that day but Tooty stayed low and I just dodged the fly. On the drift sock that's a great idea. I should try that next time I'm out.

...... and as for your dad, well, anyone who can cast in the wind with three people in the boat,
and not make any enemies is pretty darn good!

hey Jacob, have you tried a drift sock for drifting? A lot of people call them a sea anchor, too.
Really, its like dragging a parachute behind the boat... except it fills with water and not air.
here in the South, we have a redneck drift anchor: a five gallon bucket, rope tied and thrown over the stern.
I'm sure they have fancier models up there in the North...

If you have spinning rods, you're golden. With the 6'6" fiberglass medium to slow action, it's a perfect rod for dropshots off the bottom, and ice jigging when the fishes are lazy on cold days, or just in a state of "I don't wanna" biting period. With a bit of fine tuning habit from the fly fishing, you can also use it for trolling, roster tails (a challenge), or, the specialized auto-jigs for total fish domination.

NO LEO was actually going to rig an old Wonderod made in 1955 , spinning . Needed the extra length in case I don't want to slip bobber and just use a longer set up so I could fish 6' deep or so if need be.....

I hope you're talking about fly rods rigging up with spinning reels, or you better have some pretty good sinking lines in your arsenal.

No problem with it all all Tooty. My trick is, using a 5'4", 6'2", or even a 7'8" (fly or regular spinning rods), micro reels, braided 4# (for the longer length support just in case something big grabs old of the hook), regular mono 4# (going cheap), and bounce everything off the bottom.

The longer the rod, fly or regular reel type, the better the long distant casting when sitting/standing in the boat. The longer my rods are, the easier for me to cast very long distant sitting in my tube. From shore, I can hurl my dropshot rigs much farther with my glass/ultralight rods than the tuna rod users using just 1/4oz weight, while they're using 1oz to 2oz weights. The lightest I've used with are the 1/16oz dropshots, and the average distant was 60ft without any problem. The Salton Sea trips, I've used the 12ft telescopic ultralight, or the 7'8" and 6'2" rods, and casted using 1/4oz into the wind at the targeted zones of 150ft away easily.

Since you're a fly master Tooty, bring yourself a pre-fitted micro spinning reel. Interchange your fly reel with the micro spinning reel, and you'll do quite well, using 4# mono/braid.

Yeah Tooty we were lucky! I think the rod should be good. My two favorite smallie rods are 6'6" an 7'
