Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Quick question:  Do you guys have a go to float?  Or do you keep an arsenal of them in your main box?

Yes, and, Yes!

My "go-to" float is a cigar slip-float, and can easily be had at Wally World and many tackle shops.  It's made by Comal Tackle.  I usually go for red and white, but will sometimes use a chartreuse and white, depending on light conditions.

However, I consider myself to be "multi-species" in my pursuit of fish.  I'll fish for just about anything, from small sunnies up to BIG catfish.  I have about 2 dozen different floats in my bag, and more in my vehicle.  Many different sizes, colors, slip-floats, tie-on, clips, springs, etc.  Different materials, usually styrofoam or balsa.  Each has its own pros and cons.  I've got floats from TINY balsa floats that detect the lightest bites, to some huge stryofoam slip-floats that can easily float a hand-sized Green Sunfish and a 3 oz bank sinker, for Flathead bait.

I carry a whole arsenal of floats. About 2 doz different kinds

How about a pic Allen? These are some floats I carry when fishing. The Eagle Claw Pencil that's rigged  is  my favorite Yellow Perch and Crappie  Float  for this year when using 16th and 1/8th oz. Jigs .The Black Thill pencil in the top photo is my fav for Gills.I'll use a 32nd oz or lighter jig with shot on that one .Let it be noted Float fishing is extremely effective during the Spring ice out  and Late Fall /Early winter cold water periods!

This is some really interesting stuff.  I'm used to the old fashioned circle bobbers, but I'm looking branch out and try some new ones this year.  I'm thinking I'll pick up a few of these pencil style ones.

Chris theres lots of info for you at the Slip Floating group .Would love to see you post stuff there and get the attention you want on this subject .Just a suggestion you may find worthwhile .All the best fishin' to you .

I'm on my way over right now!

There was a great write up on floats a while back. I will try to find and post. John is the slip float slayer! I have had real good luck with the Mr. Crappie small, twist slip floats, they sell at walmart. John, do you use the cast bubble for flies?

Dwayne , I dont use the casting bubble with flies much but I should in the streams I fish and the panfishing I do.Thanks for reminding me .That MrCrappie twist  on float you use , is it anything like that one I have pictured in that photo above in the selection of foam floats .Great design for when you want to use a float and then maybe as the sun gets higher take it off and fish a little deeper near bottom with out having to retie.

Yes John, It is like that one. John, What are the small balsa, with yellow and pink floats. I like the looks of those.

The pencil Balsas in the Top rt. corner are: Thicker one is Eagle Claw (I believe )and the smaller diameter ones are Thills.

The pear shaped slip floats in the middle are actually Eagle Claw Balsas that I bought at Cabelas .

I think they are slip floats in lower left of box, they are pretty small.

Oh ,sorry Dwayne. Those are fixed floats made by Betts.I guess you can also slip float them. They dont cast far with the gear I have .I have used them with 2# test and they  have caught for me. The stems to fix the float  swell and get broken pretty easily and you have to find matchsticks or twigs to replace them fairly often .
