Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Back on the Blogs Forum. Been doing mostly saltwater fishing for the past 2 months. Not much panfish action in freshwater, but have caught a few largemouths, chain pickerel, and recently did a river smallmouth day. Here's a report for my recent panfish success.

After coming from the private lake that usually catches me those monster gills and not catching anything there, I went to a local city park that I'm familiar with and has the Pequonnock River running through it.

Started off by throwing a brown trout Rapala Flat Rap FLR-6. Bluegills and yellow perch were following it and eventually caught a 7" yellow with it.

Switched over to my trusty glass minnow Rapala Husky Jerk HJ-6. Had a productive retrieve going with it. I'd give it 1 to 3 jerks before pausing for about 2 seconds. That caught me 1 bluegill and 2 rock bass. One of the rock bass was a new PB and a trophy catch in CT. Measured 10" and weighed 13 ounces. Fought like a nice sized crappie or 1 1/2 pound rainbow trout on my new light action setup and saw it come shooting out of nowhere to grab the lure.

The bite died down and the bluegills weren't grabbing the rear hook like they were so I moved on to the lower tidal area of the Pequonnock River to get into some C&R stripers no bigger than 13".

Welcome back to the freshwater. Nothing like the freshwater-saltwater transfusions to make things interesting.

Nice RB Michael. It's colored a lot like a flier.
