Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Took my brother-in-law fishing Wednesday and the fish were not biting too well. Only 5 bass about 1 pound each - BUT! I put on a new spinner that I had just purchased on Tuesday and cast it out. First cast - this 11 1/8 inch beauty. Then nothing else the rest of the day!!

Below is a picture of the fish and the spinner.

At least this was a good one.

Stunning fish Jim! and that cricket-looking spinner is wild! I wonder about one in more natural colors, looks like something for Mr. Abney to try out.............

Thanks for the comment Tony! Found this lure at Dick's  and that company that is displayed on the label has several different lures. I just got 3 of them, 2 of the cricket type and another of a different type.

It was nice to catch this one on an ultra light with 4 lb line! Nice pull!

That is a great fish! I'll bet he would have smacked anything in his path, with shoulders like that!

That is a awesome catch. The spinner does look like it would catch anything that sees it.

GREAT FISH, JIM!!!!! WILD LOOKING CRICKET SPINNER!!!!

that spinner is wicked looking!  have you had any more luck on it?

Carl, thanks for the comment. I've caught more with it but nothing as large. Can't wait for the cold and rain to stop here in Walterboro, SC so I can get out and go after more gills.

Very nice fish. But to nit-pick, less than 11". Got tail at 1"mark. Nevertheless, again a nice fish.

Don, yeah - I kinda missed it on the length! Got too fired up to really pay attention. Getting one like that on a 4 lb test line, very ultra-light rig also played a part in miss measuring!

Have a great day!

Again- great fish

I have dangled all sorts of things from jig spinners, from grub tails to live worms.

But Ive never seen a cricket bait that looked quite like that. Really interesting....wonder where to get one.

Even more interesting is that a large bluegill like that hit a jig spinner when the water is so cold. At least where I am around Lake Murray (central SC) the water is in the mid to high 40's. I havent even seen a bluegill lately.

David, the gill was caught in June 2012. I mistakenly posted that I had gotten the spinner from Dick's - that was in error. I went back and checked my purchase and it was from a local boat dealer's tackle shop. Notice 2 of the pictures show the brand name of the spinner.  The 3rd picture has the manufacture's name and address - probably be able contact them and purchase some.
